GABRIEL’S PROMISE (GABRIEL’S INFERNO #4) by SYLVAIN REYNARD

January 19, 2020

SYNOPSIS:

New York Times bestselling author Sylvain Reynard returns with the fourth installment of the beloved Gabriel’s Inferno series.

When Gabriel and Julia Emerson first lay eyes on their newborn daughter, Clare, they realize life as they know it will never be the same. Gabriel has vowed to be a good father when he suddenly receives an invitation to give a series of lectures in Edinburgh, Scotland—an opportunity of high prestige—but that would mean leaving his wife and child in Boston. Hesitant to bring it up, he keeps the opportunity from Julia as long as he can, not knowing she has a secret of her own.

When a frightening situation arises that threatens their new family, both parents must make sacrifices. With the family in danger, the looming question remains: Will Gabriel pursue his lectureship in Edinburgh, leaving Julia and Clare vulnerable in Boston, or will he abandon the chance of a lifetime in order to ensure his family’s safety?

MY REVIEW:

I absolutely ADORE the ‘Gabriel’s Inferno’ series, and was thrilled to start reading this latest entry in the series. Gabriel and Julia are now married and new parents. What should be a blissful and ecstatic time is instead filled with some tension – as the new family is seemingly threatened by someone or something. But for what reason?

Gabriel and Julia are at a new stage in their relationship as they deal with the pressures of a newborn baby, family and work. The author does a wonderful job of exploring the difficulties and the joy of new parenthood.

“He listened to the gentle tide of his wife’s breathing and the soothing quiet of the household. Then Gabriel slept.”

Both Julia and Gabriel face new challenges, personally and professionally. There is also an element of suspense here as someone or something seems to challenge Gabriel and his new family.
There is passion, romance and exotic locales here as the Emersons travel between Scotland and Boston. The beautiful explorations of Dante and Italian literature and culture are all fascinating!

Gabriel and Julia’s romance is central here and I loved seeing how their relationship has evolved. Gabriel is still as passionate and protective as ever! And there is plenty of humor here, too. ‘Gabriel’s Promise’ is a lovely entry in the series and the elements of suspense and mystery definitely need a resolution. I am certainly looking forward to more Julia and Gabriel and seeing where their story goes!

(Thank you to the publisher for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review.)

THE MAN IN THE BLACK SUIT by SYLVAIN REYNARD

December 19, 2017

SYNOPSIS:

Acacia Santos excels at her job as concierge at the prestigious Hotel Victoire in Paris. When her superior, Marcel, is attacked in a supposed random mugging, she is tasked with serving one of the hotel’s most mysterious and attractive guests.

Nicholas Cassirer checks into the hotel under an assumed name every three months. Usually, he stays in the penthouse suite with a beautiful female companion but on this occasion, he arrives alone and is displeased in having to deal with someone new. A match of wits ensues as he tests Acacia’s expertise with a series of almost impossible demands. Her intelligence and creativity rise to the challenge, earning his respect.

They strike a tenuous accord until Acacia discovers a famous stolen painting in his suite, she contacts a former boyfriend who works for the elite BRB, a unit of French law enforcement that deals with art thefts.

Nicholas is questioned by police and released when it is revealed the painting is a reproduction. Irked with her behavior, Acacia’s supervisor demotes her threatening dismissal and the cancellation of her work permit.

But Acacia has already attracted Nicholas’s attention. Remorseful that she may lose her job on his account, he offers her a choice – she can wait until her supervisor dismisses her, or she can leave the city of lights behind and become his personal assistant.

Acacia initially refuses his offer, but Nicholas is persistent. He reveals himself as a man who quietly acquires stolen art in order to restore it to its rightful owners. Faced with mounting familial debts and the possibility of dismissal and deportation, she agrees to work for him.

Nicholas opens up a whole new world of beauty and intrigue to Acacia as they travel the globe. Soon the line between employer and assistant is blurred, and the two lonely people embark on a passionate relationship.

MY REVIEW:

“She wondered if he always wore black suits. She wondered if the Earth would cease moving on its axis if he wore, say, navy blue.”

What an adventure! Romance and intrigue and exotic locations all add up to a sexy, fast-paced, INTELLIGENT story.

Nicholas is a regular guest at the elegant Hotel Victoire in Paris. As a concierge, Acacia must be ready to attend to the needs of every guest, no matter how whimsical or outrageous the requests might be. When Marcel, another concierge at the hotel, is severely injured in an attack, Acacia must fill in and take care of his regular guest, Nicholas.

Nicholas challenges Acacia in many ways but she rises to the occasion. She earns his respect and through a series of events, must chose between staying behind in Paris and risk losing her work visa or traveling with Nicholas as his personal assistant.

The detailed synopsis and my brief description are all you need to know! And that these two very lonely people fall in love with each other, even though each one of them is scarred, both inside and out.

Nicholas leads a life of intrigue but is used to being let down by romantic partners. He is brilliant, handsome, wealthy and cultured. He sees a kindred sou in Acacia and sees someone who is not only beautiful but intelligent and kind.

The Eiffel Tower winked at him, beckoning him to visit her. To do so, he’d need a companion worthy of so beautiful and romantic a location. Sometimes it seemed as if he were surrounded by vipers. Nowhere was the kind of woman worthy of the Eiffel Tower. He turned his back on her and went inside.

Acacia grudgingly agrees to travel with Nicholas as his assistant which leads the two of them around the world to the most gorgeous locales. Nicholas is in search of stolen art as well hell-bent on obtaining revenge against the criminals who took something very precious to him. Acacia is reluctant to leave her concierge position and even more reluctant to become a paid employee to Nicholas. But she becomes involved in the investigation into Marcel’s attack and must leave the country as soon as possible.

Their roles become blurred as these two lonely people begin to fall in love. Acacia can’t help but be attracted to the strong, handsome and brilliant Nicholas. He has a tragic background – as does Acacia – but we won’t find out how tragic until later in the book.

“I love this man. I can see his heart and his soul in his eyes, and I don’t ever want to be without them.”

I absolutely adored the setting of the story – the famous cities and galleries and sites around the world that I’ve either visited or want to visit someday. This is romance with wit and intelligence and plenty of suspense mixed in. And I applaud the author for mixing in compassion and culture and understanding. You don’t often find these themes in a romantic suspense book! Sylvain Reynard created two very memorable main characters and a book that I fell in love with. Bravo, Mr. Reynard!

Favorite Quote:

“Acacia lifted Nicholas’s hand and kissed his knuckles. “She doesn’t appreciate beauty; that much is true.”
“No one has called me beautiful in some time.”
“You need new friends.”

The Shadow is a lush, passionate and complex story, filled with romance, art, history and suspense. I am not a huge fan of paranormal stories but I make an exception for Sylvain Reynard’s books. I LOVE the Gabriel’s Redemption series and Professor Gabriel Emerson makes an appearance here. What more could you ask for?

William and Raven are reunited in this story but William is battling forces who are trying to sabotage him. He has finally found the love of his life and he wants nothing more than to worship Raven forever.

“I will never have your nobility of spirit, or your protective nature, but as long as I have your love, I can be content.”

William will stop at nothing to protect Raven from both other vampires and from those who scheme to drive them apart. There is lots of action and mystery, written in the style that is completely unique to Sylvain Reynard. This is a very sensual and passionate book, and even if you do not usually read paranormal romance, you will love this story. The streets of Florence seem to come alive! We also learn about William’s early life and the tragic story of how he lost his first love. Raven is completely trusting of him and along with the intrigue, there is also a little humor here, too.

“You’re giving me a toothache.”
He pulled back. “How is that possible?”
She laughed. “It’s a figure of speech. It means you’re being too sweet. Say something awful.”
William’s expression changed and he brought his lips to her ear. “I want to take you back to the house, so I can spread you on my bed and do all kinds of wicked things to you.”

I can’t wait to see what happens next! The Shadow is a beautifully written book and my favorite in the Florentine Series so far. Don’t miss it!!

I think all this deep conversation is because of the view,” she blurted out. “The beauty of the city makes people reflect on life and time and secret desires.”

William chuckled and pressed a kiss to her temple. “What do you desire, little bird?”

“The steadfast love of a good man.”

His arm about her tightened. “I am not a good man. I’m not a man at all. But I love you and my love is certainly steadfast.”

She closed her eyes and leaned against him.

“I admire you.” He spoke into her hair.

“Why?”

“Because you’re principled and you hold fast to those principles even when it’s difficult. You’re noble.”

“I feel awkward and overwhelmed more than anything.”

“That is not how you appear to me.” He lifted her chin. “Knowing what I know about your character and your heart, I’ve never seen anyone more beautiful.”

Excerpt:

Raven watched as William efficiently disrobed, neatly folding every article of black clothing (with the exception of underwear, which he never wore), and placing it on the vanity.

She brushed imaginary lint from her dress as he stood in front of her, naked.

He was under six feet in height, his body lean and strong. Raven took a moment to appreciate the definition of his muscled chest and abdomen, and the strong cast to his thighs. Not even a statue carved by the most talented sculptor could create a being with so much perfection.

His face put her in mind of an angel with intense, gray eyes that now looked at her expectantly.

She hid her face. “You said you loved me.”

“I did. What’s more, I meant it.”

“Love is a peculiar thing. I’ve seen it. I’ve even cheered for it. But I never believed it was for me.”

“Why shouldn’t a beautiful, fierce young woman hope for love?”

“Because, as you put it, human beings are shallow.”

“Love is deep.” His rich voice echoed in the bathroom.

“Love is having the power to destroy another person.”

William stepped closer. “Are you afraid of being destroyed?”

“Destroyed, consumed, betrayed.” She fidgeted with the neckline of her gown.

William placed his hand over hers, stilling it. “Love creates; it doesn’t destroy.”

His lips found the place where her neck met her shoulder. He kissed her leisurely, tracing the path of her bared collarbone with his mouth.

His fingers brushed her zipper. “Let me.”

He undid her dress, dropping it to the marble tiles.

Her bra followed. She was as naked as he.

His eyes roved her body appraisingly. His pale fingers caressed her cheek, her mouth, and her neck. His strong hands cupped her breasts, her abdomen, and her hips.

His gray eyes met hers.

“The power you describe is the power you have here.” He touched her forehead before moving his hand to cover her heart. “And here. It’s the power you have over me. Power I haven’t yielded to another since I was human.”

He brought his lips to her ear. “Your fears are shared.”

With a slow kiss on her neck, he led her into the shower, standing behind her underneath a tropical rainfall showerhead.

Raven closed her eyes and lifted her face, like a flower following the sun. The warm water soaked her hair and streamed down the generous curves of her body.

“I’ve never showered with another person. What happens next?” William rested his hands on her shoulders.

She wiped the water from her face.

“Whatever you want. Just don’t let me fall.”

William’s gaze dropped to her right leg, which she was favoring.

“Is the pain terrible?”

“It’s worse after I’ve been lying down. Sometimes I topple over.”

William spread his arm around her waist, drawing her back to his chest. “Then I must be sure to catch you.”

She kissed him, reaching up to run her fingers through his wet hair as the water poured down their shoulders.

Her motions were fraught with an eagerness born of love and affection and the relief of remembering she hadn’t lost him.

He was hers.

Even now, naked, with a myriad of flaws few men overlooked, he embraced her. He embraced her imperfections.

He loved her.

His cool hands scorched her skin, splaying fingers wide over her abdomen and bringing her backside into contact with what rose between his hips.

She gave him her weight and he held firm, nipping and licking at her lips before enticing her to enter his mouth.

He entertained the intrusion for a moment or two then, with a growl, he spun her around, pressing their chests together.

Raven looked up into blazing gray eyes.

“Are you certain?”

She nodded.

“I need the words, Raven. I need to know you want this.”

“I want you.”

He took her mouth, his tongue alternately penetrating and retreating in a sensual rhythm.

She tilted her head, welcoming him, as the water continued to rain down.

Hands roamed over slick skin as their lower bodies came into alignment. She touched his neck, his shoulders, his biceps, holding them tightly in an effort to remain upright.

William was not a tame lover.

In his arms, she sensed his control, his desire, and the war that waged between the two. But he’d never harmed her and had always focused his attention on giving pleasure before taking it. Usually more than once.

“You’re a dream,” she sighed. “A dream of love I never thought I’d have.”

His eyes burned into hers.

Without warning, he lifted her, tugging her thighs around his hips.

He lowered his mouth to her breasts, tasting and teasing before sucking droplets of water from her eager flesh.

She wrapped her arms around his neck, feeling him eager between her legs.

He lifted her higher, hands beneath her backside, making sure he was correctly aligned.

“Breathe,” he commanded, his eyes boring in to hers.

Here was the vampyre, proud and powerful, teetering on the edge of control. He bared his teeth as if on instinct and his chest rumbled.

“Just don’t break me,” she whispered, pushing a lock of blond hair from his forehead.

William’s expression grew even more fierce.

“I won’t break you. Whatever harm I bring to you I vow to heal.”

He swallowed her reply with his kiss. Then with a single thrust, he entered her.

His kisses were as fierce as his movements as he pushed inside and withdrew, over and over. His grip on her backside tightened as he lifted and moved her in concert with his own motion.

Raven clung to him, her hand trailing to his lower back so she could urge him deeper.

Not that he needed the encouragement.

Her breasts brushed against his chest, the friction teasing and arousing.

She ignored the warm spray of the water, the scent of soap and William, and the nagging discomfort in her leg and ankle. Her focus was on feeling as he brought her swiftly to the brink of orgasm.

Before she could signal how close she was, she climaxed, her hand clutching his neck as she threw her head back.

William continued his pace until she’d finished, his mouth dropping to her breasts, drawing one of them into his mouth.

When she opened her eyes, she found him staring at her hungrily.

“I have only begun,” he rasped. “Breathe.”

THE PRINCE (THE FLORENTINE #0.5) by SYLVAIN REYNARD

January 17, 2015

Prince-2

Synopsis:

The unveiling of a set of priceless illustrations of Dante’s Divine Comedy at the Uffizi Gallery exposes the unsuspecting Professor Gabriel Emerson and his beloved wife, Julianne, to a mysterious and dangerous enemy.

Unbeknownst to the Professor, the illustrations he secretly acquired years ago were stolen a century earlier from the ruler of Florence’s underworld. Now one of the most dangerous beings in Italy is determined to reclaim his prized artwork and exact revenge on the Emersons, but not before he uncovers something disturbing about Julianne …

Set in the city of Florence, “The Prince” is a prequel novella to “The Raven,” which is the first book in the new Florentine Series Trilogy by Sylvain Reynard.

“The Prince” can be read as a standalone but readers of The Gabriel Series may be curious about the connection between The Professor’s world and the dark, secret underworld of “The Prince.”

My Review:

The Prince, Sylvain Reynard’s novella, is darkly sexy, fascinating, and highly addictive. The author’s writing is completely hypnotic and very powerful. The story is a wonderful introduction into the new Florentine Series, and features the stunning Professor Gabriel Emerson and his beloved Julianne. However, we meet a whole new set of characters in this very sexy, paranormal romance. I absolutely fell in love with the story!

The Prince is ruthless, cunning, and powerful. But what mysteries is the Prince hiding? And what secrets will he uncover? I can’t wait to find out in The Raven. This story can be devoured in one sitting, and will leave you wanting more. The setting is broody and mysterious, and the bridge between the Gabriel Trilogy and the Florentine series is simply brilliant. I have sorely missed Sylvain Reynard and I anxiously await the The Raven!

Excerpt from THE PRINCE by Sylvain Reynard

In the distance, the Prince could hear voices and muffled sounds.

He approached silently, almost floating across the floor.

Desperate groans and the rustling of fabric filled his ears, along with the twin sounds of rapidly beating hearts. He could smell their scents, the aromas heightened due to their sexual arousal.

He growled in reaction.

The corridor was shrouded in darkness but the Prince could see that the professor had his wife up against a window between two statues, her legs wrapped around his waist.

Her voice was breathy as she spoke, but the Prince tuned out her words, moving closer so he could catch a glimpse of her lovely face.

At the sight of it, flushed with passion, his old heart quickened and he felt the stirrings of arousal.

It was not his custom to observe rather than participate. But on this occasion, he decided to make an exception. Careful to remain in the darkness, he moved to the wall opposite the couple.

The woman squirmed in her lover’s arms, her high heels catching on his tuxedo jacket. Her fingers flew to his neck, undoing his bow tie and tossing it carelessly to the floor.

She unbuttoned his shirt, and her mouth moved to his chest, as murmurs of pleasure escaped his lips.

The Prince felt more than desire as he watched the woman’s eager movements. He caught a glimpse of her exquisite mouth and the toss of her long hair that would no doubt feel like silk between his fingers.

She lifted her head to smile at the man who held her close and he could see love in her eyes.

About the Author
I’m interested in the way literature can help us explore aspects of the human condition – particularly suffering, sex, love, faith, and redemption. My favourite stories are those in which a character takes a journey, either a physical journey to a new and exciting place, or a personal journey in which he or she learns something about himself/herself.
I’m also interested in how aesthetic elements such as art, architecture, and music can be used to tell a story or to illuminate the traits of a particular character. In my writing, I combine all of these elements with the themes of redemption, forgiveness, and the transformative power of goodness.
I try to use my platform as an author to raise awareness about the following charities: Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep Foundation, WorldVision, Alex’s Lemonade Stand, and Covenant House. For more information, see my Twitter account.
