There was an 8-week waitlist for this audiobook from my library and now I know why!
ππͺπ¨π©π΅πΈπ’π΅π€π©πͺπ―π¨ is a tensely gripping thriller that delves into the terrifying world of a woman’s struggle against an unknown intruder. I assumed all the action would take place within her home but I was wrong. The author explores the womanβs backstory in flashbacks and if a thriller can be called a feminist thriller, this is it.
This heart-pounding tale explores the lengths a mother will go to protect her family when faced with a menacing intruder. Although none of the characters are named, after listening to the audiobook (skillfully narrated by Emily Ellet!), I felt very connected to the main protagonist of the story.
As the tension escalates, it becomes increasingly clear that the intruder is not merely a burglar but a relentless stalker fixated on tormenting the protagonist and her family. One of the most compelling aspects of ππͺπ¨π©π΅πΈπ’π΅π€π©πͺπ―π¨ is the author’s ability to portray the protagonist’s fear and desperation. The reader is immediately drawn into the character’s harrowing experience, feeling every ounce of her terror and vulnerability. The author masterfully conveys the constant state of anxiety and paranoia that the protagonist lives in, as she tries to convince the police of the danger lurking in her own home.
The narrative takes an unexpected turn as the police and others dismiss the woman’s pleas, leaving her to fend for herself. As the tension builds, the reader is kept on the edge of their seat, eagerly continuing to discover how the protagonist will protect herself and her children.
What sets ππͺπ¨π©π΅πΈπ’π΅π€π©πͺπ―π¨ apart from other thrillers is the strong portrayal of the protagonist’s resilience. Instead of succumbing to fear, she taps into her inner strength, arming herself with the courage to fight back. The reader is taken on a rollercoaster ride as the protagonist employs clever strategies to outwit her pursuer.
With its well-crafted suspense, relatable main character, and a satisfying conclusion, this book is a must-read for thriller fans.
About the Book:
A mother is forced to the breaking point when her life and the lives of her children are threatened by an intruder
Home alone with her young children during a blizzard, a mother tucks her son back into bed in the middle of the night. She hears a noiseβold houses are always making some kind of noise. But this sound is disturbingly familiar: itβs the tread of footsteps, unusually heavy and slow, coming up the stairs.
She sees the figure of a man appear down the hallway, shrouded in the shadows. Terrified, she quietly wakes her children and hustles them into the oldest part of the house, a tiny, secret room concealed behind a wall. There they hide as the man searches for them, trying to tempt the children out with promises and scare the mother into surrender.
In the suffocating darkness, the mother struggles to remain calm, to plan. Should she search for a weapon or attempt escape? But then she catches another glimpse of him. That face. That voice. And at once she knows her situation is even more dire than sheβd feared, because she knows exactly who he isβand what he wants.
