THE WRONG FAMILY by TARRYN FISHER

December 28, 2020

About the Book:

Have you ever been wrong about someone?

Juno was wrong about Winnie Crouch.

Before moving in with the Crouch family, Juno thought Winnie and her husband, Nigel, had the perfect marriage, the perfect son—the perfect life. Only now that she’s living in their beautiful house, she sees the cracks in the crumbling facade are too deep to ignore.

Still, she isn’t one to judge. After her grim diagnosis, the retired therapist simply wants a place to live out the rest of her days in peace. But that peace is shattered the day Juno overhears a chilling conversation between Winnie and Nigel…

She shouldn’t get involved.

She really shouldn’t.

But this could be her chance to make a few things right.

Because if you thought Juno didn’t have a secret of her own, then you were wrong about her, too.

From the wickedly dark mind of bestselling author Tarryn Fisher, The Wrong Family is a taut new thriller that’s riddled with twists in all the right places.

My Review:

Tarryn Fisher remains one of my favorite authors but this book just felt very different from her other books. The character development fell short for me so I was not invested in their actions at all. Winnie, Nigel and Juno did not hold much interest for me so by the ending, I did not really care about them as I should have. I also felt that the mental illness of Dakota, Winnie’s brother, was merely a plot device thrown in and not as fully developed as it could have been.

This book is told from two points of view and has an almost Parasite-like feel to it. Winnie is a mother to a young teenager who seems to have a terrible marriage. I am not quite sure what her motivation was throughout this story. Then we have Juno, who is a former therapist, living secretly in Winnie and Nigel’s home. It seems very unlikely that a stranger can go undetected in this era of Ring and Nest home security systems but there you have it.

Juno feels she must intervene in Winnie’s domestic situation before things get too out of hand. What ensues is a wild, violent and unpredictable story that just was not fleshed out enough for me. While I love a good domestic thriller, the violence felt heavy-handed and the plot twists just seemed too far-fetched for me. Sadly, ‘The Wrong Family’ was a miss for me.

THE WIVES by TARRYN FISHER

December 30, 2019

SYNOPSIS:

Thursday’s husband, Seth, has two other wives. She’s never met them, and she doesn’t know anything about them. She agreed to this unusual arrangement because she’s so crazy about him.

But one day, she finds something. Something that tells a very different—and horrifying—story about the man she married.

What follows is one of the most twisted, shocking thrillers you’ll ever read.

You’ll have to grab a copy to find out why.

MY REVIEW:

(Thank you to the publisher for providing an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.)

This was quite the unexpected surprise! However while I had very high hopes for this book, for me the plot did not quite live up to the fascinating synopsis. I devour lots of domestic thrillers and adore the genre. And the idea of a polygamous relationship was very intriguing. Unfortunately many things in this book just did not sit well with me.

“We have entire lives outside of our marriage. It’s the only way to stay sane.”

The premise of the book started off strong. However I never quite connected with Thursday and failed to understand how Seth, a seemingly average man, had several woman completely devoted to him. I also couldn’t connect to the way in which Thursday believed women were supposed to act. Her domestic life was just a puzzle to me. While this book is a very fast-paced read, the author made several comments that seemed downright misogynistic to me.

“He needs to know that there are no lies in a marriage—no matter how many women you’re married to—which makes the truth even more complicated.”

I expected more twists and turns to this book based on the very promising beginning. However by the time I reached the end, there were simply too many unanswered questions and underdeveloped characters. This could have been a nuanced domestic thriller, but instead is a very simplistic story. I also loathe when authors make fun of women who use Botox or fillers. That is a cheap plot device and completely unnecessary.

While the pacing of the first part of the book was very interesting, the last part of the book felt rushed and unsteady. I love Tarryn Fisher but for me, this was not my favorite book of hers. I am definitely in the minority with this one, so if you like a fact-paced thriller with a huge twist at the end, then you will probably like ‘The Wives.’ While I appreciated the premise, I did not enjoy how it was executed.

F*CK MARRIAGE by TARRYN FISHER

May 18, 2019

About the Book:

Two years ago, Billie Tarrow’s husband left her for another woman. Shamed and divorced, Billie retreated to her family home in Port Townsend, far from her old life in New York. After a near-death encounter, Billie decides to return to the city that took everything from her.

But sometimes in the midst of heartache, hope suffocates the pain.

Satcher Gable has carried a torch for Billie for ten years. When she suddenly returns to New York a single woman, he can’t believe his good fortune. But convincing her to walk away from her heartache is proving more difficult than Satcher anticipated. A changed woman, Billie’s only goal is revenge.

My Review:

There’s a lot to be said for spiteful pettiness. It’s underrated by those moral do-gooders who jive to the beat of karma.

I didn’t know what to expect when I began reading ‘F*ck Marriage’ but I quickly realized this story was a classic, twisty, sarcastic and smart Tarryn Fisher story. Billie, the main protagonist, is not entirely likable but she is certainly out to reclaim what she thinks is rightfully hers. And it is so much fun watching her do it.

Pearl stole a married man, and now I am going to make sure their marriage never happens. Woods is mine.

This starts out as a story about obsession but turns into much more. Billie created a successful blog but along the way, she lost sight of her marriage. She was blindsided when her husband Woods, the love of her life, left her for another woman. Pearl and Woods now work at the blog that Billie created but she is back in New York, determined to win back Woods, no matter what the cost.

Billie and Woods met in college and she never in a million years dreamed he would ever leave her. But when he left, Billie sold her share of the blog to Woods’ best friend, Satcher. Billie then moved to Washington state to heal but now she is back. Satcher hires Billie back and it quickly becomes evident that Billie might end up ruining her own life as she sets out to ruin Woods’ life.

This story is about life after divorce, healing and finding love again. It is never sappy or sentimental and Tarryn Fisher as usual creates lots of surprises along the way. I read this book in one day and loved Billie’s journey back to herself. Billie couldn’t see what was right in front of her until it was almost too late.

He made me feel special, but I hadn’t been. I was an enhancement to the life he wanted, not the partner with whom he wanted to weather any storm in life; a side dish rather than the entree.

I had some minor issues with the story but overall I really enjoyed it and loved the main characters. Satcher was very memorable and as always, I loved Tarry Fisher’s dark humor and sharp observations on life, relationships and marriage. If you like character-driven stories, then you’ll love this surprising, ultimately romantic book.

Review: ATHEISTS WHO KNEEL AND PRAY by TARRYN FISHER

November 25, 2018

Synopsis:

Yara Phillips is a wandering muse.

She dates men who need her, but always moves on to something new, never staying in one place for very long.

David Lisey is in need of a muse.

A talented musician lacking lyrical inspiration. When he first sees her, he knows he’s found what he’s been looking for.

Yara believes she can give David exactly what he needs to reach his full potential:
A broken heart.

David’s religion is love.

Yara’s religion is heartache.

Neither is willing to surrender, but religion always requires sacrifice.

My Review:

4.5 – 5 Stars!!

“I want the pain to stay where it is, hard and heavy. It makes me feel close to her. I am inspired, but I am empty.”

WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG TO GET TO THIS BOOK?! The audiobook is now part of the Audible Romance Package so if you are able, LISTEN TO THIS BOOK! Writing a review for a book that I actually took notes on is not easy. While I don’t always love all Tarryn Fisher’s books, I fell head over heels in love with AWKAP. Even the title is a thoughtful, meaningful reflection of the tone of the book. Please don’t let the title throw you off, this is a story about love, flaws, acceptance and redemption. Definitely NOT a a book about religion!

“It was awful to be this person, so jammed up with bad experiences you couldn’t let anyone see your real face.”

This is a very different kind of romance novel. The main protagonist, Yara, is most definitely not a lovable or even very likable heroine. She moves from city to city, from job to job and from relationship to relationship. She leaves men before they can abandon her, because she is certain that will always be the outcome. But yet I fell in love with Yara and loved how the author made her very human and very REAL, flaws and all. Even when I disagreed with Yara, I understood her motivations. This is a novel filled with romance and with heartbreak and life.

“It’s human nature to want to fix things. That was my first thought, actually, but you’re right. Someone should take you as you are, not have an agenda for how they want to change you.”

Yes, Yara is definitely a character you love to hate. David comes into her life and she just knows that they can never last. Even when David professes his love for her, Yara is so damaged that she creates conflict where none exists and becomes the jealous girlfriend, a role she swears she never wanted. Some of her insecurities are real but some are not. David is a talented musician whose music becomes even better after he meets Yara. She becomes his muse.

“The most twisted thing about being an artist comes when you understand you’re creating for one specific person. The painful part is realizing who that person is, and the devastating part is knowing the compulsion will never go away.”

This is not a perfect story and the rather abrupt ending stunned me. But I expect nothing less from Ms. Fisher and love how she can always surprise me with her writing. I realized after I finished AWKAP that the ending was perfect for David and Yara. Real life is messy and doesn’t always have a pretty, perfect ending tied up neatly with a ribbon.

“My drug was wanderlust. I got high by starting over. We always had a drug. We could replace one with another, but humans were addicts.”

I applaud the author for the very detailed descriptions of Seattle and London, two of my favorite cities. The settings lent a very moody tone to the book and were the perfect backdrop for Yara and David’s turbulent relationship. Yara is the perfect Tarryn Fisher heroine: smart, independent and prickly. If you are a fan of Tarryn Fisher, you will LOVE this story. It is moody, inventive, messy and brutally honest.

“Come back to me. Come back. Come.”

“Without the risk of getting hurt, there is no probability of falling in love,” I tell her. “Vulnerability and love go hand in hand.”

“That must be why all the men are gone.” She smirks. “With that sort of logic, it’s no wonder.”

I take her in—smooth, honey skin that smells like apples, the broad bridge of her nose and arched nostrils. I don’t know how to tell her that back then men were not the romantics. The things we had left of the past: the movies, and the books, and the stories, were things hoped for, not seen.

I lean close so that my mouth is next to her ear, my lips brushing her skin.

“There is no logic in love, little thief. It starts small and grows into something very big and endless. Something you’re willing to die for. Don’t you long to feel something like that? Instead of all the emptiness you’re so used to…”

She pulls back and stares me right in the face. I can’t help myself. The quirky little corner of her mouth is raised like she’s mocking me, probably not the best time to kiss a woman. But I drop my head anyway and kiss her, letting my tongue softly graze her bottom lip. She pauses, her breath sucking in, and then she pushes away from me. For a moment, it’s just the two of us facing each other on the dance floor, the cider lights speckling our faces, and then as abruptly as she pulled away, she turns on her heel and leaves. I smile as I watch her go, her steps unsure like she’s dizzy.

“Dancers don’t get dizzy,” I call after her.

It’s the little one who interests me, her hair more tangled than her sister’s, like she didn’t bother with it at all. Her eyes are curious and wild: brown, common and yet uncommon in the way they slant upward at the outside corners. She stands in the foyer, her hands clasped at her waist, but instead of studying my body like most women do, her head is tilted to the side, eyes fixed on my boots. I clear my throat to get her attention and she drags her eyes away from my feet and back to my face. She frowns and shakes her head like she’s just realizing where she is.

“Your boots are beautiful,” she finally says. From somewhere beside me her sister groans and her mother lets out what I take as an embarrassed laugh.

“Thank you,” I say, unable to keep the humor from my voice. “I designed them myself.” I don’t usually tell people that but she seems genuinely interested.

“You design clothes?” she asks, surprised.

“You’re surprised that I’m good at something other than fucking?”

Her mother makes a choking noise, but we both ignore it, our attention solely focused.

“Yes, I’m quite surprised,” she says. “Though I can’t attest personally to the fucking part…”

“Yet,” I say.

“Yet,” she echoes, with a slight nod of her head.

MY REVIEW:

“We didn’t always want what was right. We wanted what we couldn’t have.”

God this book tore me up!!! Gutted me. Enthralled me. Made me feel anxious, sad, elated…all at once. Thank you, Tarryn Fisher, for this magnificent roller-coaster ride of a book. I won’t ever forget it.

At once magical and painfully realistic, F*CK LOVE is like nothing you’ve read before. It has some similarities to one of all-time favorite series, The Love Me With Lies books, but it is different, unique and wonderfully, beautifully hopeful and cynical at the same time. Can that be? Tarry Fisher pulls it off with one of the most surprising books I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading.

The story begins with a completely disorienting scene that sets the tone for the rest of the book.

Kit hit me out of nowhere. I had a dream that made me take a closer look at a guy I was otherwise ignoring. And from that dream I discovered a connection. I don’t even think about the dream anymore. For the last eight weeks I’ve been living it.

Yes, the main character Helena has a dream, in which she is living a life completely different from her current path. What will she do with it? Will her dream become her reality? In true Tarryn Fisher form, the author has created a kind, beautiful, smart and very quirky girl, who aches for what she cannot have.

“We have something, Helena. In another life, it would have been a beautiful something.” That hurts. God, does it. I’ve seen that life. He doesn’t even know what he’s talking about. In his mind, I’m just some possibility that could have been, but in my mind, he’s the only possibility.

F*ck Love is a wildly unpredictable book that is poignant and uplifting, funny and tragic, and will take you on a roller-coaster ride of emotions. I can’t help but wonder how much of this story (if any) is based on real-life events. And yes, I imagine Tarryn Fisher herself as Helena. To me, it is a perfect fit!  Don’t miss F*ck Love, it is absolutely one of my favorite books of 2016.

Favorite Quote:

Be gentle with yourself. Embrace the lows so that you can more effectively enjoy the highs. Love the fight. Love it so much, and let it save you when your emotional muscles have become soft.

Chapter One
#wtf

“You are supposed to be with me.”

What words are these? They startle me, and at first I think I’ve heard him wrong. He’s leaning across the table while our significant others are twenty feet away, waiting in line for our food.

“You and me,” he says. “Not us and them.”

I blink at him before I realize he’s making a joke. I laugh and go back to looking at my magazine. Actually, it’s not really a magazine. It’s a math journal, because I’m super cool like that.

“Helena…” I don’t look up right away. I’m afraid to. If I look up and see that he’s not joking, everything will change.

“Helena.” He reaches out and touches my hand. I jump, pull back. My chair makes a horrid scraping sound, and Neil looks over. I pretend that I dropped something and reach under the table. Under the table are our shoes and legs. There is a blue crayon lying at my feet; I pick it up and resurface.

Neil is at the front of the line ordering our food, and my best friend’s boyfriend is waiting for my response, his eyes heavy with burden.

“Are you drunk?” I hiss. “What the fuck?”

“No,” he says. Though he doesn’t look so sure. For the first time, I notice the scruff on his face. The skin around his eyes is sallow. He’s going through something, maybe? Life is being bullshit.

“If this is a joke, you’re making me really uncomfortable,” I tell him. “Della is right there. What the hell is wrong with you?”

“I only have ten minutes, Helena.” His eyes move to the blue crayon, which is resting between our hands.

“Ten minutes for what? You’re sweating,” I say. “Did you take something, are you on the crack?” What type of drugs make you sweat like that? Crack? Heroine?

I want Neil and Della to come back. I want everything to go back to normal. I spin around to see where they are.

“Helena…”

“Stop saying my name like that.” My voice shakes. I make to stand up, but he grabs the crayon, then my hand.

“I don’t have much time. Let me show you.”

He’s sitting very still, but his eyes remind me of a cornered animal: frightened, panicked, bright. I’ve never seen that look on his face, but since Della’s only been dating him for a few months, it’s a moot point. I don’t really know this guy. He could be a druggie for all I know. He turns my hand over so it’s palm up, and I let him. I don’t know why, but I do.

He places the crayon in my palm and closes my fist around it.

“You have to say it out loud,” he says. “Show me, Kit.”

“Say it, Helena. Please. I’m afraid of what will happen if you don’t.”

Because he looks so afraid, I say it.

“Show me, Kit.” And then, “Should I know what this is?”

“No one should,” he says. And then everything goes black.

January 1, 2016

FL cover

Helena Conway has fallen in love.
Unwillingly.
Unwittingly.
But not unprovoked. Kit Isley is everything she’s not—unstructured, untethered, and not even a little bit careful.
It could all be so beautiful…if he wasn’t dating her best friend. Helena must defy her heart, do the right thing, and think of others.
Until she doesn’t.

From Chapter One:
