How much did you hear, Ethan?
We both have a lot to say to each other.
He knew she was hiding something. And he was not going to ask. He was going to let her tell him—in her own time.
We do.
Ethan, this scares me.
I know, suga. Me too.
You’re scared?
It happens. More often than you know.
She always knew he was a worrier. That’s why she spared him a lot of what she had been thinking, but look where that got them.
I’d like to keep talking with you but it’s time to put the boys to bed.
She checked the time and calculated the time difference. It was seven-thirty there. Damn it! She wanted to keep talking … she wanted to know what else he was scared of.
Ok.
I really do want to continue this conversation, Mia. Want to say goodnight to the boys?
I do 🙂
Ok. I’ll call you in a bit.
She put down the phone and got out of bed. She needed to get ready for her dinner plans with Marty. He should arrive in about thirty minutes. They always went to a steak house. This time around it was Rosebud’s. Her growing pregnant belly was craving a steak. And potatoes and mac and cheese. Hurrying into her closet, she changed into a loose black sundress and a pair of black sandals. She piled her curly hair into a high bun on top of her head and then went about making up her face, keeping it natural and her eye makeup light along with a neutral lipstick.
She searched in her jewelry cabinet for her platinum hoop earrings when she saw the pink diamond set that Ethan gave her ages ago. She put the necklace on and then the bracelet. She hadn’t worn these pieces in years, but tonight it seemed right.
While fastening her bracelet, her phone rang and the James Bond theme yet again made her smile. A FaceTime request. Sneaky man, she thought, accepting the call. Her two adorable boys greeted her with a boisterous “Mommy.” Her smile grew. Those little boys made her life complete. And in five months, another little baby would only add to the joy she felt being a mother. She remembered years ago feeling shocked when she mentioned kids to Ethan. When he said he wanted five kids, the dread she expected was not there—only hope. And now these constant bits of joy filled her with love on a daily basis.
“Hi, sweeties. Having fun with Daddy?”
“Yes!”
“Good. Now it’s time for you sweet little boys to go to bed.”
“Daddy already read us a story,” Rory said.
“Oh yeah? What did he read?”
“Guess How Much I Love You,” answered Pierce.
“Ooh, one of my favorites.”
“Mommy, could you sing us a song?” Rory asked with a shy smile.
“Of course, my sweet. What do you want?”
“‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star!’” Rory exclaimed.
“It’s been awhile since I’ve sung that. Can you help me?”
They nodded and started singing, their sweet angelic voices wrapping around her heart as they sang the first line.
“Oh, I remember this song now,” she said and joined in. “‘Up above the world so high. Like a diamond in the sky …”
She sang a few verses a couple of times and they eventually nodded off. Ethan took the phone from their small hands and tucked them in. Seeing him care for those boys always did something wonderful to her heart. He left their room before he brought the phone up to his face so she could see him. And damn he was so hot. He had a little bit of a five o’clock shadow against his tanned skin which made her seriously want to melt.
He smiled as he looked at his phone. “You look delicious,” he said, a devilish twinkle to his eyes. Those same eyes lowered their gaze and his smile grew. “Nice necklace.”
“You mean this old thing?”
“Still looks great. You look like you’re going out.”
“Yeah. Marty’s taking me for steak and chocolate cake. It’s kind of our thing.”
“Sounds—” and the horn to Marty’s car announced his arrival.
“Fabulous. And I’m starving too. Hope he has enough money.”
“For the tiniest woman I know, you have an appetite to match mine at times.”
She laughed as she grabbed her purse and left her house.
“That is very true,” she said with a slight lift of her eyebrows.
“We’re still talking about food, right?” he asked as she galloped down the steps. She smiled at Ethan and waved to Marty.
“I don’t know,” and a small chuckle escaped from her lips. She got into Marty’s car and then turned the phone to Marty. “Say ‘Hi,’ Marty.”
“Who am I saying ‘Hi’ to?” her guitarist asked, a skeptical glint in his eyes.
“Hi, Marty,” Ethan said with a laugh.
“Ooh, the spousal unit,” he responded, a bright smile replaced his earlier skepticism. “Hey, Ethan.”
“Be warned, man. My wife is starving.”
Marty laughed and started down the street. Mia turned to the phone and regarded the handsome face of her husband. She missed him so damn much.
“Um … I’ve got to go … see you next week?” she asked hesitantly.
“I hope so,” he said, a small smile lifting his lips. “Bye, suga.”
“Bye,” she said, returning his smile. She was his suga again and it felt fantastic.

Author Bio:
During the day, Ryleigh is an analyst, but even then, she’s writing, sneakily crafting scenes on post-it notes. She’s been told she’s a bit of a geek…some say nerd. She’ll agree to it all. She loves music. It’s been a force in her life for as long as she can remember. Her love of Star Wars and superheroes has probably been going on just as long…see, this is where the geek/nerd thing comes into play. But, most of all, Ryleigh loves the written word. She’s been writing for a long time. Her first story came to her during one of her history classes. She wrote it in the margins of her notebook in teeny tiny letters so no one knew that she was writing a book instead of taking notes on 16th Century Europe. She currently lives in Chicago, Illinois, with her husband and son, along with her Siberian Husky, Mick Jagger, and her cat, Winston Churchill.
