Excerpt + Giveaway: WHISKEY GIRL by ADRIANE LEIGH

June 26, 2018

Title: Whiskey Girl
Author: Adriane Leigh
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: June 26, 2018

Blurb
She was
the one thing holding him together. Until she was gone.
And then
there was whiskey.
Fallon Gentry has spent the last decade reliving one dark night in
his head. The moment he lost the woman he loved when a single blink cascaded
into a series of events that stole both of their lives. Now his nights are
spent playing music in southern honky-tonks and nursing the memory of her the
only way he knows how–at the bottom of a whiskey bottle.
A brief stint in Nashville, a hit song, and a brush with Hollywood
couldn’t bring him closer to God, but when the ghost of Augusta Belle Branson
appears in his corner of another lonely dive bar late after dark, he’s forced
to confront everything he thought he knew about that fateful night, and a few
things he didn’t.
He’s her
contradiction, she’s his salvation.
A firestorm of emotion consumes them when they come together after ten
lost years, every moment more revealing, more unpredictable, more intoxicating
than the next until the only reckoning left for Fallon is the one he must make
with himself. But this time, fate may have left an after-burn too bitter to
swallow. This time, he may lose his whiskey girl for good.
An unforgettable, epic love story about two lost
souls who, against all odds, find themselves through their passion and music.
Filled with raw emotion, this lyrical, all-the-feels masterpiece may catapult
Adriane Leigh into the league of Colleen Hoover, Brittainy Cherry, and L.J.

Fallon
The first time I met Augusta Belle Branson, she was fixin’
on killin’ herself.
Said the minute I’d walked up, she was tryin’ to decide if
jumpin’ off the bridge in the center—where the water was deep and the current
stronger—would be a swifter end, or if she should jump near the edge, where
jagged limestone slabs anchored the slow-moving current.
Certain death for sure.
I replayed the split second when the Indian summer sun burst
through the orange oak leaves, a halo of warmth enveloping her.
Like an angel. Stardust sparkling straight from heaven,
ploppin’ her in my path.
And then she turned, the most startling shade of liquid
amber eyes breathing something real and alive, like fire, into my soul.
That same something I’d been runnin’ from—or chasin’,
dependin’ on how you looked at it—just about every day since.
I settled myself on the lone wooden stool that awaited at center
stage, my thoughts drawing back to the present. My head swam, but the old
familiar chords floated on through the current of whiskey in my blood, and I
strummed the first few notes of a song I wrote a lot of nights ago by an act of
sheer muscle memory.
Old acoustic guitar resting on my knee, my first and third
fingers in position on the strings, the opening chords of “Whiskey Girl” bled
from my fingers.
Every chord, another dagger.
Every whispered lyric, my undoing.
I still didn’t know what the fuck had overtaken me the night
I’d written this song in a fevered rush.
Well, the booze might have played a part, but I happened to
think my best shit came out of uninhibited states.
I’d just had a fuckton of uninhibited states recently.
And the harder the liquor, the more she haunted me.
Whiskey Girl.
My poisoned lullaby.
The crowd of a few hundred erupted into a standing ovation
when I ended with the final, emotion-charged words.
The irony of this song was it was the one that’d launched my
career. The first single to hit radio waves and then the top spot on the
Billboard charts, and brought reporters, music executives, long-lost family
members I wasn’t even really sure I was related to, and too much other scum
with an end game that carried dollar signs to my front doorstep.
I’d moved to Nashville a rising star and left two years
later, middle finger in the air as I tossed my once-promising music career out
with last night’s liquor bottles in favor of the open road.
Chasing something.
Not finding the one thing I needed.
Playing local honky-tonks for a fraction of the money I
could have made.
But the truth was, the road was the only place I could find
my happy.
A familiar ball of pain formed in my throat as I stood,
pushing my guitar over one shoulder and bowing deeply. I couldn’t see a single
face behind the glaring stage lights, but still, some part of me pretended she
could be out there, that I was singing to her.
That she would hear her song and find her way back to me.
After hundreds of faceless crowds and too many bottles of
Tennessee whiskey to bother counting, I still felt the pull inside me to travel
to every town in America if that’s what it took to find her.
Hell, maybe she was happily married with a few kids, a dog,
and a fucking minivan by now.
I nodded my head, giving one last wave to the crowd in the
dark beyond, then left the stage, taking the steps two at a time and angling
past the curtains to head for the tiny-ass dressing room this dive bar
provided. Heading for another chug of amber gold before packing my shit into my
truck and hitting the road.
I pushed a hand through my hair, thinking maybe a shower
would be in order before I bailed, when a curvy little thing backed right up
into me.
My palms landed on her shoulders, warm blond waves falling
in a cascade over one side. The heady scent of peaches and honey filled my
nostrils. My eyes slammed closed and brought me back to summer nights under a
giant oak, fireflies melding together with the stars above like a painting.
“Sorry, I just dropped my phone.” The sweet-scented creature
spun, brilliant smile falling from her face when our eyes made contact for the
first time.
Every coldhearted memory slammed into my chest like a pallet
of bricks.
I narrowed my eyes, gaze tracing the familiar yet unfamiliar
angles of her porcelain face.
She was thinner now, cheeks sharp slashes of bone that
highlighted her always-devastating round eyes and full lips. It was her, all
right. I’d know this woman anywhere.
“Hi, Fallon.” I’d been dreamin’ of this moment for the
better part of a decade, and still, my heart wasn’t prepared for those two
words. My name on her lips left me with a toxic reaction.
My whiskey girl.
My damnation and my salvation.
“I need a fucking minute.” I dropped my hands from her
shoulders, her skin still haunting my fingertips, and walked straight down the
narrow hallway, pushing the rusted back door open so hard the hinges protested.
Warm night air filled my lungs, replacing the empty feeling
seeing her again had left.
“Fallon…” Hell, she’d followed me out.
And hell if wanted her to, but I didn’t not want her to
either.
The emotions bombarding my mind were just a-fucking-bout
unbearable.
“I said I need a fucking minute.” The sentence came out as
more of a growl than I intended. Before she could reply, I stomped across the
potholed parking lot, aiming for my heavy-duty Ford.
I yanked the door open, digging behind the driver’s seat for
a fresh bottle of my favorite recipe.
I couldn’t be bothered to retrieve the half-full bottle I’d
left in my dressing room. I had to get as far the fuck away from her just to
clear my head and process what her being here even meant.
My hands circled the neck of the bottle, and I opened it in
a flash, chugging back the first warm bite of pleasure I’d been craving.
I tossed the cap on my dash and fished the keys out of my
pocket, about to climb into the cab and make hay, when fingertips painted a
dark navy filtered into my vision and back out again, my goddamn truck keys
hanging from one finger.
“Fuck,” I bit out, crawling out of the cab and swiping for
the keys.
My reactions were a helluva lot slower than I thought they
were. How much of that bottle had I drunk before the show? I shook the thought
from my head, realizing this was probably about close to my average state of
play on any given day. Runnin’ away from the life Augusta Belle and I’d had
took something out of me. Something only whiskey could fill.
“I don’t care what your stupid ass does on your own time,
but you’re not dying on mine, Fallon Gentry.”
My head pounded then. A whole fucking sentence out of her
pretty pink lips, and my body’s old dependable reaction to her infuriating
every cell of me.
I’d never been in control when it came to Augusta. Shouldn’t
have been surprised it was no different now.
“As irritating as ever, I see,” I said, swiping for my keys
one more time and missing before I stumbled off around her, whiskey bottle
clutched in my hand and hell on my mind.
Augusta was back, and there wasn’t enough whiskey in the
state of Tennessee to help me deal.

Prologue

My heart pounded in unwavering beats. I stood over him, tears rushing down my cheeks, my eyes unblinking at the slumped form sprawled across the seeping maroon concrete.

“Hunter,” I sobbed and dropped to my knees, the concrete grating the denim, soaking the blood clear through. I didn’t care. All I saw was him, because for the first time since we’d met, I couldn’t feel him.

“Hunter, please, breathe,” I whimpered and dropped my ear to his barely parted lips. The lips I’d pressed to mine tenderly, the lips that had roamed my skin and caressed my body.

“Hunter—” I choked on the words as tears rained down my cheeks, my hands and body trembling so fiercely I couldn’t focus long enough to tell if he was breathing.

I can’t feel him. He’s gone.

“Hunter,” I whispered and tried to still my misfiring heart.

“He’s dead, Erin.” A voice echoed over my shoulder and sent chills racing down my spine. No. NO. “No!” I turned to find empty pits of burnt amber assessing me.

“What did you do?” I shrieked and balled my tiny fists into the hard rock wall of the man towering over me. His hands caught my wrists with ease and halted my assault.

“Don’t fuck with me.” The familiar eyes tore into mine as I hunkered from his imposing force. His grip tightened painfully, ripping a grunt past my lips.

“No,” I moaned, ready to collapse at Hunter’s slouched form. Nothing mattered — the world ceased moving when Hunter’s heart had stopped in his chest.

“Let’s go.” John Walker hauled me from the concrete and carried me through the dark corridors of the warehouse and away from the man who’d promised he’d always protect me.

“I just keep thinking I wasn’t in danger before I met you,” I said.

“That’s a lie.” His fiery eyes cut to me. “That’s a lie and you fucking know it. Imagine what it would have looked like if you hadn’t met me. Imagine if you would have opened the door to someone else tonight. Maybe JW would have come looking for you first, shown up some night when your husband wasn’t home, because he’s never home anymore, is he?” His angry greens sliced my gaze. “No, he left you to swing in the wind. Who knows what would have happened if you’d opened that door on JW’s smiling face. Pepper spray won’t cut it with him, babe.” Hunter’s words and the memory of JW’s eagle eyes chilled me through to my toes. I swallowed the lump in my throat as I sucked in cool breaths to remain calm despite the chaos that my life had descended into.

“Hunter,” I said as fear choked my insides.

“And I’m sure you would have called the police, Princess, because that’s your thing.” He tossed me a sarcastic smile. “But that wouldn’t have ended well either. JW would have taken a finger before letting you hit the first number. It’s the world JW lives in, Erin. So if you want to take your chances, by all means. But when I hired you to be my PA, I as good as saved your ass. Said it before and I’ll keep sayin’ it ’til you believe it.” He leaned in, his lips pressed to my ear and breath tickling down my neck. “I’m the best thing for you.” His quiet rasp filled the hollows of my mind and caused a shudder to roll through my body.

Fear and lust became inextricably intertwined for me that day, ruining me for anyone else. He was about to bring my world shattering down around my feet in an entirely new way.

“Come here.” He pulled me into the broad, hard wall of his chiseled chest and shoved a rough hand down my pants. My head tossed back and a low moan fell from my lips when the pad of his thumb made searing hot contact with my clit. His fingers dipped into the silky flesh and caressed the skin before plunging two fingers into my body.

“So fucking wet, sweetheart.” His teeth tore at the flesh of my neck and my hands clutched at his biceps as my hips worked a fierce rhythm against his palm.

“Fuck,” I panted and bit down on my bottom lip, desperate to contain the energy pulsing through my muscles for just a second longer.

“Strip.” Hunter’s eyes glazed with that fiery, passion-consumed look I loved. I pulled the shirt over my shoulders and let it drop in the dirt at my feet before his eyes darted from my lacy bra back to my eyes with a head tilt. I smiled and shimmied the straps down my arms, taking my time to tantalize him. It was working. He followed my actions like a starved lion, and before I had even slipped one arm out, Hunter had his hands behind my back and was unhooking the flimsy fabric for me. He pulled the lace off my body and raised my arms above my head, twisting the black fabric in knots around my wrists.

The soft clink of his belt came next. After that, my thoughts spun away like wild butterflies and I was reduced to only feeling. Lost were the fear and the terror and the secrets. Gone was the numbness.

I heard him.

I felt him.

I smelled him.

I yearned to reach out and trace the scars decorating his forearms with my fingertips. I wanted to feel fingernails digging into hard flesh, but instead I was caught, strung against this tree and waiting for Hunter to use me.

I sucked in a quick breath when chilled leather danced across my skin. His eyes flared with need when he stepped back. “Stay still.” The soft growl hissed through the night and sent a current straight between my shifting thighs.

“Yes, sir.”

I watched as she sat at the cafe. She looked worried, rushed, continuing to gaze around, on edge. She should be. This was far from over and she was too fucking naïve to know better.

I sighed, hoping she’d wrap up soon so I could get on with it. I checked my watch as she sipped with a soft frown and fat tears in her eyes. Affected by another man, again. Burned by love.

A bright white loading van pulled into the spot obscuring my view of Erin. I grunted, having half a mind to run down there, pull out my nine millimeter, and tell them to get the fuck out of the way.

I groaned when two guys in uniform jumped out and began unloading a dolly and crates of fresh food before delivering it into the cafe.

“Christ.” I stuck my key in the ignition to move to a better vantage point before my phone lit up, the distinct and ominous tone that pulsed irritation through my bloodstream.

Looks like you lost sight of the target.

My eyes floated at the words, my brain failing to register the meaning. The target.

“What the fuck?” I hurled from the car, darting across the street as a horn blared. Ignoring it, I barreled on. Not after all this time. Not possible.

My boot hit the curb and my eyes finally landed on the table where Erin had sat.

Only this time pandemonium surrounded the scene. A woman hollering, tears streaming down her cheeks as she pointed down the street. A waiter tried to calm her, eyes darting from her crazed face and back to where her finger pointed.

Where the fuck is she?

My eyes travelled the other faces obscuring my view. I shuttled forward on heavy feet before I was close enough to see over the frenzied heads. Three waiters, a bus boy, the hostess, and a half dozen diners lingered around the small table.

She was gone.

“Where the fuck is she?” I grabbed a waiter by the elbow and growled as I stepped into the suffocating circle of fear.

“Sh-sh-she-she-”Erin’s mother stuttered, pushing my rage to a tipping point.

I grasped the erratic woman’s elbow and spun her to face me.“FBI!” I flipped my badge. “Where is Erin Warner?” I yelled, every moment of Erin’s life in the balance.

Dark eyes widened as terror fogged her features.“Taken.” Her finger shook as she pointed down the street.

Jesus, no. On my watch and right under my nose, Erin had disappeared.

Bonus Scene

Carter POV – Chapter One – Steel and Lace #1

Nikki had been hounding me about this opening for weeks. I knew I couldn’t keep it from her, we’d been fucking for months and as much as I tried to keep her out of my business life, she always managed to weasel her way in. It didn’t matter, showing up with someone was good in a social situation; and Nikki wasn’t a bad date to have. The press made more of an effort to turn up at these events if they thought the beautiful and bitchy supermodel Nikki Vilanova would be on my arm. She was always good for a little drama in the tabloids; not that I liked the drama but I could appreciate the role the press played in my line of work. They’d been following our relationship for a while, if you could even call it that. When she was in town we spent time together, we were never anything more or less. I walked the line with keeping her at a comfortable distance and keeping her happy because she was a great fuck. That had been established the first night we were together.; she was wild and uninhibited and never wore out her welcome. She didn’t require any post-coital cuddling– just the way I preferred it. I had a bedroom attached to my office for late nights that had the added benefit of serving as a fuck pad. She’d asked once or twice for me to take her home, but I’d been able to put her off easily. The truth was, I wasn’t comfortable bringing anyone home. I was wary of who I could trust and wasn’t comfortable inviting them into my house and my life any more than I had to.

Nikki and I had shown up just a few minutes before to the opening of a new boutique on Newbury and it wasn’t long before I was bored out of my skull. Nikki giggled and kept a predatory hand on my forearm as we sipped champagne. My eyes scanned the room for faces I knew and wanted to avoid, and for those that I would need to mingle with tonight. Madeleine would have been my first choice for a date, she was great with these things; she had the ability to direct conversation and knew intuitively when I wasn’t interested in talking to someone. Nikki on the other hand was interested in talking to everyone; she liked to keep as many connections in her back pocket as possible, never knowing when they would come in handy later. I guess at the end of the day I was just another connection for her, albeit one that she fucked when it was convenient.

I tightened my jaw when Nikki’s fingertips trailed up my forearm suggestively. I ignored her intimate gesture and brought the champagne flute to my lips before my gaze settled on a pair of dark green eyes that were focused on mine. Striking, soft, gentle green eyes. My heart rate accelerated and the conversation around me seemed to fall away. The world halted as my eyes focused on the dark-haired beauty staring back at me.

My gaze dropped to the chestnut tendrils framing her beautiful, heart-shaped face. Her full lips were curved in a soft frown as she looked at me. What could she be thinking that would have her frowning at me? Perhaps my reputation had preceded me, it wouldn’t be the first time.

But this girl– I knew I had to meet her, to talk to her, to hear her voice; those lush lips curving around sensual words. I envisioned soft lips locked on my ear lobe, whispering breathless moans along the skin of my neck, hearing her call my name as I sank into her.

Fuck me, this girl is affecting me.

But I knew I was affecting her too. I could see it. She couldn’t break our intense stare down any easier than I could.

Finally the world started to spin again and I arched my eyebrow at her, a silent acknowledgment of the moment that had flared between us. I watched her take a quick breath, her full breasts perfectly outlined in her fitted white dress. Fuck, I wanted to feel them in my hands, suck on them, tease them until her nipples hardened. What color would they be when I coaxed her body into arousal? The same shade as her dark, rosy lips?

Her eyes widened for a moment and then she turned back to her friend and tried to pretend that I hadn’t just swept the air from her lungs.

I had to meet her.

I waited until the party cleared out later that night and Nikki was tied up with someone else. I didn’t know with who and I didn’t care, I was just glad to have her off my back so I could seek out the brunette beauty that I’d been consumed with all night. She’d never been far from my sight. I’d followed her with my eyes, insuring she didn’t leave and watching her mingle. In my perusal, I’d noticed every single server pass her flirty glances as they gave her champagne. Jealously poured through my body when she smiled sweetly back at them. I’d have to call the company that provided the waitstaff and make it known in no uncertain terms that if the servers couldn’t refrain from flirting with the guests, they would no longer be getting my business.

I watched as she spoke to her friend, a smile spreading across her face, her eyes crinkling in the most captivating way. My heart skipped a beat every time she laughed because her entire face lit up and her green eyes danced. I swear that smile had every guy in the room falling at her feet, but I knew intuitively they weren’t her type; they couldn’t make a girl like that happy. And even if I wasn’t her type, I’d make it my mission in life to be.

Fuck if I can’t keep my eyes off her, I’m ruined.

“Great view.” I breathed in her ear as she stood at the windows looking out over Boston Harbor. I wouldn’t know if the view was great or not, all I could think about was running my hands through her hair. Twisting my fingers in it, feeling the silky strands caress my skin. Fuck, my dick’s getting hard just thinking about her hair.

What the fuck is wrong with me?

She spun around and a spray of champagne landed on my herringbone suit. Her burning green eyes traveled up my body. I held my breath as she took me in.

“Oh my God, I am so sorry,” she finally spoke before setting her glass down on a nearby table and digging through the tiny purse she was carrying. My eyes flicked from her flushed face to the liquid dampening the arm of my suit. I frowned for a moment and wondered how I could work with this situation. The thought crossed my mind that I could coerce her into a date in return for spilling on my suit. A smirk played across my lips at the thought.

“It’s alright.” I placed a hand on her arm and fire sparked in my system. Her soft skin beneath mine had the blood pumping through my veins at a punishing pace. She took my fucking breath away and I hadn’t even gotten her dress off yet.

“I’m sorry, I’ll pay to have it cleaned. If you send the bill to me. Here…” She said before she was off digging in her bag again. Fuck that bag. Look at me.

“I’ve got it. Really,” I said as I squeezed her arm reassuringly. My eyes couldn’t help but trail down her curvy body; past her defined waist, her lush hips that I couldn’t stop thinking about digging my fingers into. I imagined those shapely legs wrapped around my hips as I plowed into her soft body. Fuck, my dick grew impossibly harder as my brain shut down.

“Carter Morgan.” I held my hand out to her.

“Evangeline Austin,” she replied as she placed her small hand in mine. I was lost in the swirling green depths of her eyes as we gazed at each other. The world fell away and all that existed in that moment was her hand in mine.

“Hey Eva, are you ready? Everyone who’s anyone has come and gone.” I heard a voice burst our perfect, hypnotic bubble. I didn’t care. I was choosing to block everyone else out. Nothing mattered more in that moment than the beautiful, green-eyed angel whose hand was locked in mine. “Uh… hi, I’m Cate Evans.” The voice at my shoulder intruded on the moment I thought I was having with this girl– Evangeline, Eva. I glanced to see the friend she’d been with all night. Short, blonde, bubbly Cate Evans; my mind registered the name and filed it away for later.

I only nodded at her and then my eyes searched out Evangeline’s again. I couldn’t stay away from her for long. I knew nothing about her and yet I was sure of that. I was consumed with the beautiful, flustered, carefree Evangeline Austin.

“Well Evangeline, despite the fact that you may have ruined my favorite suit, I hope to see you again.” Fuck if that didn’t come out wrong. Here I’d met a beautiful, dark-haired angel and I may have fucked it all up before it’d even begun. I flashed her the confident smirk that generally gets me out of trouble in any given situation and hoped I could rectify the bad impression I’m sure I made on her.

“Ms. Evans.” I addressed her friend before giving Evangeline one last lingering glance. Then I dropped her hand and turned to walk out. I scanned the room for Nikki and saw her drinking with a large group by the bar. Nikki was a party girl in the truest form and tonight wouldn’t be the first time I’d ducked out before midnight while she stayed out ’til dawn.

I pulled my phone out of my pocket as soon as I hit the pavement and found Parker waiting along the curb.

“Mr. Morgan.” Parker nodded as I slid into the backseat.

“Evening, Parker.” I mumbled as I scrolled through the list of contacts on my phone before I found the number I was looking for and hit send.

“Johnson? Find me everything you can on Evangeline Austin and Cate Evans in Boston. May be connected to the fashion industry. It’s time sensitive. Thanks.” I hung up as Parker pulled into the traffic of the Boston night.

Evangeline. She was an angel after all.

Synopsis

Behind every beautiful thing, there is some kind of pain…

Always overlooked. Always just there. That’s what Dillon was to me.

Until one night.

In one night she flipped my world on its axis and there’s no going back. But she has secrets, and secrets fester like an open wound. They color the past and forecast the future, but I’m determined to open her up; free her from her memories so she can live in the light and have the life she deserves.

It’s just too bad that she wants nothing to do with me. But I’m nothing if not persistent and I’m not a man that gives up without a fight. I’ve had a taste and there’s no walking away.
I just have to convince her that I’m not what she fears, I’m what she wants.

Slade, like Wild and Ridge, is a standalone.
Reading Wild and Ridge first will provide some back story, but is not required to read Slade.

Excerpt

“I guess I should have talked to you about…the other weekend. I get the sense that you wanted to do those things to me. Fair assumption?”

Fair.” I nodded, afraid of the next words to come out of her mouth.

“Well, I’m not sure I’m into that. It looks pretty fucking terrifying.”

“It’s all about trust. I’ll never take you farther than you want to go.”

She huffed and averted her hardened gaze. “I have issues with that.”

“No shit.” I mumbled. Her eyes cut to mine. “I read you like a book, Dillon. You think I didn’t realize that you have trust issues when you can’t even look me in the eye when I’m inside you?” I ran a lock of her champagne hair between my callused fingers.

She scrunched her nose and looked out to white-capped waves crashing against grey stone.

“I want to earn your trust.” I took a step closer.

“Who says I want you to? I never asked you to. We were just messing around, Slade. If you hadn’t noticed, I mess around with a lot of people.”

Red flames licked my vision. My fists clenched at my sides and every muscle in my body went rigid. “You still fucking around with other people?”

“If I was?”

“Fuck, Dillon. I haven’t been with anyone since we started–”

“Started what? Started fucking? I’m just the town slut. Down for a fun time, nothing more. Surprised one of your buddies didn’t warn you not to get involved with me.”

“Oh, they did.” I grumbled, thinking back on Wild’s warning not to get wrapped up in Dillon. Too little, too late. That ship had sailed.

She arched full eyebrows at me, gnawed her lips between her teeth until they turned winter white while anger flared in her indignant eyes. “Don’t fucking come back to my house, Slade. Don’t fucking do it. From the beginning you’ve acted like you have some sort of macho bullshit claim on me, why is that?” She nailed me with her pointer finger.

“Because you’re mine.”

Synopsis

Sometimes doing the wrong thing feels so right…

I’m a player. I’m an asshole. I’m someone you should stay away from.

I have demons.
I’ve made mistakes.
And the biggest can’t be taken back.

I’ve gone to hell and back in twenty-nine years and I’m only now coming to terms with moving forward, righting my wrongs, and making amends. Except not everyone deserves forgiveness. Sometimes the damage done is beyond repair.
Everyday is exactly the same. I focus on the pain, in the quest to feel and forget, but I remember everything. When I close my eyes the darkness encroaches and some days it feels like the things that kill me are the things that make me feel alive.

*Ridge, like Wild, is a standalone.
Reading Wild first will provide some back story, but is not required to read Ridge

Review:

Ridge was much more than I expected, and I really loved this book! We first met Ridge in Wild (Book #1) but this is a standalone book, and you do not need to read Wild first.

Ridge slept with his brother’s fiancée Mia, but they really never intended to hurt anyone. They really love each other but Ridge is consumed by guilt over his relationship with his brother, so he suddenly breaks up with Mia in an effort to repair his relationship with his brother. Ridge battled addictions most of his life, and breaking up with Mia sends him into a downward spiral. He had a very, very rough past, including drugs and spending time in juvenile detention, among other things.

Ridge has now become a successful restaurant owner but his pain over Mia pulls him into a very, very dark place. He tries to have other relationships but no one can compare to Mia. Even when he was a jerk to everyone, I loved him! He was never intentionally hurtful and really wanted to make things right.

Mia had every right not to care about Ridge, but even after he broke her heart, she really tries to do the right thing. I loved how she was a multi-dimensional character and seemed very “real” to me.

Oh, and the sex! It is HOT AS HELL . I mean, really dirty, scorching hot sex scenes. I applaud you Ms. Wild! I literally read this book in a few hours. It is the kind of book where you can’t tear your eyes away from what is happening in front of you. If you like a down-and-dirty story with flawed characters, you will love Ridge.

EXCERPT

“Come here.” I pulled her into my arms. She shook and trembled, without saying a word. I stroked her back, down her long hair and sucked in the heady scent of her damp skin clinging to me.
“I brought food. It’s going to be all right, My,” I murmured against her cheek before I glanced down to see a river of red streaking the tile grout.
Jesus Christ what was happening?
“Mia.” I swallowed and pulled at her hand, the one clenched in a tight fist. “Fuck Mia, give me your hand.” I pried her fingers open to find a razor blade cutting into her palm.
“I tried not to, I didn’t want to, but I’m losing it.” She sobbed and dropped the razor from her hand. It fell in her lap, bright red marring the fluffy white towel wrapped around her.
My hands shook as I looked around for something to wrap her hand in. I had to stop the bleeding. I didn’t know anything about this. Was it too deep? Did she need stitches? Fuck, maybe I should call an ambulance.
“Jesus, Mia, you should have called me.” I pulled my shirt over my head and wrapped it around her open palm, pressing to stop the bleeding.
“I was just holding the razor so tight, I didn’t even realize that it cut me.”
“I know, baby.” I rained kisses across her forehead.
A soft sob escaped her throat.
“If it happens again, call me. Talk to me. Take it out on me, baby. I’m here for you. I know this is so fucking hard but you’re not alone, I’m here, My.”
She licked her lips and her deep green eyes turned up to me. Silent tears fell as I held her cut hand in my own.
“Christ, come here.” I heaved her into my arms and carried her out the door and laid her on the bed.
“Listen to me. I’m taking you somewhere tomorrow. Therapy, whatever you need. Take the time off work, you went back too soon, I shouldn’t have left you alone, fuck.” I was rambling, but I was terrified. I’d never seen her like this. Despondent, empty, numb. Jesus Christ, my beautiful, fiery girl was numb.
“Losing her, it just brought me back. After Josh killed himself, they disappeared. They were there, but they weren’t.”
“I know, baby. I know.” I rocked her across my lap on the bed.
“Let me be strong for you. Let me take the pain away. Remember what we used to do, baby? The pain, the pleasure? I’ll be that for you, again. Take it out on me.”
Her eyes held mine, passion surged before she straddled my waist, wrapped her fingers in my hair and pressed her lips to me in a punishing kiss.
