Q’s POV
“Did you get it?”
Franco scowled as he came into the foyer, covered in mud and mulch from the garden. “Course I fucking got it. Damn bird almost killed me.”
I laughed. “I’m guessing it didn’t appreciate you tying a note around its neck?”
He brushed off his black slacks, growling, “No, it didn’t. I’m not some peacock wrangler to pin notes on it like a fucking donkey. I’m your head of security.” He stood straighter, puffing his chest like the peacock I’d bought for Tess. “I’ve killed men—I don’t go running around after a fancy-pants bird. Next time you get a stupid idea like this, get Suzette to do it.”
He stomped off while I laughed. I kept him around for protection but also for comedy relief.
My thoughts returned to the note I’d written for Tess. So simple, only one line, but it would mean the world to her. It meant the world to me.
All it said was:
Je suis à toi esclave cinquante-huit. Je t’aime.
I’m yours, slave fifty-eight. I love you.

Pepper Winters wears many roles. Some of them include writer, reader, sometimes wife. She loves dark, taboo stories that twist with your head. The more tortured the hero, the better, and she constantly thinks up ways to break and fix her characters. Oh, and sex… her books have sex.
