ABOUT THE BOOK:
Four women learn their boss (a man who’s always been surrounded by rumors about how he treats women) is next in line to be CEO—what will happen when they decide enough is enough?
Sloane, Ardie, Grace, and Rosalita are four women who have worked at Truviv, Inc., for years. The sudden death of Truviv’s CEO means their boss, Ames, will likely take over the entire company. Ames is a complicated man, a man they’ve all known for a long time, a man who’s always been surrounded by…whispers. Whispers that have always been ignored by those in charge. But the world has changed, and the women are watching Ames’s latest promotion differently. This time, they’ve decided enough is enough.
Sloane and her colleagues set in motion a catastrophic shift within every floor and department of the Truviv offices. All four women’s lives—as women, colleagues, mothers, wives, friends, even adversaries—will change dramatically as a result.
”If only you had listened to us,” they tell us on page one, “none of this would have happened.”
MY REVIEW:
”Listen.”
What a fantastic book about women in the workplace! Working moms especially will love this book. Every single page resonated with me!
Sloane, Ardie and Grace are attorneys in the legal department of a public corporation. A new hire named Katherine is welcomed into their circle. They all work for Ames Garrett, the current General Counsel who is in line to be named CEO of the company.
But Sloane can’t let that happen. She has seen how Ames treats the women who work for him, and how she herself has been treated during her long career at the company. Along the way we are treated to the author’s sharp and insightful comments about working women today.
Children turned men into heroes and mothers into lesser employees, if we didn’t play our cards right.
Sloane’s friends at work are her lifeblood. Together they form an unshakable bond: they share war stories about schools, their husbands, their constant worrying and their lack of sleep. The dialogue in this book is SO realistic that I have had almost the exact same conversations with my friends!
Sloane’s most closely held tenet was that women could not be real friends unless they were willing to talk shit together. It was the closest thing she knew to a blood pact that didn’t involve knives.
This is a suspenseful, tightly woven thriller that also happens to have a fantastic feminist message. It also manages to be bitingly funny along the way. This is a book that actually lives up to all the hype.
Ardie, like many of us, had caught perfectionism, an illness that we heard was more common in women by a factor of roughly twenty to one.
If you have ever been treated unprofessionally or ever had any sexist comments tossed your way, you will devour this book. The author “gets it.” The forced smiles, the exhaustion at work, the worrying about picking our kids up on time…every working mother has lived through all of this.
We wanted to do our jobs—was that too much to ask? We were tired of planned server outages and mandatory training sessions to learn the latest updates to Adobe Acrobat Pro. We a little bit hated cake day and whoever came around to force us to attend, despite the fact that we’d already announced quite publicly that we were trying to eat Paleo this month.
Sloane and her friends finally decide that enough is enough and they take action. Then something happens that changing all of their lives forever.
The book is interspersed with police interviews and depositions of the main characters. This smart and fast-paced thriller might have a mystery at its heart but it is also one of my favorite books this year, and should be read by every woman, daughter, mother and husband.
“Our legacy would be our words. Shouted out loud. For all to hear. We were done petitioning to be believed. We were finished requesting the benefit of the doubt. We weren’t asking for permission. The floor was ours.”
