Synopsis:
The golden skies, the translucent twilight, the white nights, all hold the promise of youth, of love, of eternal renewal. The war has not yet touched this city of fallen grandeur, or the lives of two sisters, Tatiana and Dasha Metanova, who share a single room in a cramped apartment with their brother and parents. Their world is turned upside down when Hitler’s armies attack Russia and begin their unstoppable blitz to Leningrad.
Yet there is light in the darkness. Tatiana meets Alexander, a brave young officer in the Red Army. Strong and self-confident, yet guarding a mysterious and troubled past, he is drawn to Tatiana—and she to him. Starvation, desperation, and fear soon grip their city during the terrible winter of the merciless German siege. Tatiana and Alexander’s impossible love threatens to tear the Metanova family apart and expose the dangerous secret Alexander so carefully protects—a secret as devastating as the war itself—as the lovers are swept up in the brutal tides that will change the world and their lives forever.
My Review:
“Ask yourself these three questions, Tatiana Metanova, and you will know who you are. Ask: What do believe in? What do you hope for? What do you love?”
Yes I am the one of the few people who had never experienced the glory that is ‘The Bronze Horseman’! If you have been waiting to read this magnificent novel, don’t wait! It is everything everyone says it is and more! I chose to listen to the audiobook and it was absolutely breathtaking. The narrator is perfection! I could almost see the streets of Leningrad, feel the warm lake breezes and experience the abject cold and hunger caused by the German invasion of the Soviet Union.
The love that Alexander and Tatiana have for each other is transcendent. From their first meeting, they were bound together. Even though Tatiana’s sister was also in love with Alexander, Tania never let her love for her Shura die.
“Alexander, were you looking for me?”
“All my life.”
The sweeping historical romance is so detailed and well-researched that I literally felt transported to the 1940’s. All of the characters, the families and the soldiers were so finely drawn that I hung on every word! I absolutely adored Paullina Simons’ writing style. Even if historical romance might not be your favorite genre, please please give this one a try! It should be at the top of every romance lover’s reading list.
“Please don’t die,” she whispered. “I don’t think I can bury
you. I already buried everyone else.”“How can I die,” Alexander said, his voice breaking, “when you
have poured your immortal blood into me?”
Shura and Tania fought every obstacle and suffered through unimaginable situations to be together. There was always someone conspiring against them or someone else whose feelings they had to consider. Yes this is a weighty story but I highly recommend ‘The Bronze Horseman’ to all. It is magnificent!
“Alexander knew that before he had light instead of darkness, he had to deserve light instead of darkness.”
