LUCKY SCARS by KERRY HEAVENS

July 4, 2018

Title: Lucky Scars
Author: Kerry Heavens
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: July 3, 2018

Synopsis:

Not every love story begins with a fiery explosion of lust.
Some are tiny embers of hope that smoulder slowly until the stars align…

I’d been living in a bubble.
It was meant to protect me from the things in life that hurt.
I could live, I could laugh, but at least I didn’t have to love.
Loving was dangerous and I would never do it again.

It was working just fine, until the bubble burst.
It let in danger.
It let in light.
It let in…him.

Unknowingly I’d been living in the dark, feeling my way.
He filled my world with starlight.
He showed me how to move on to the next level.
He made me feel again.

I thought the wounds from the past would never fully heal,
But perhaps they only heal when the time is right.

Sometimes you just have to thank your lucky scars.

EXCERPT:

A game company? That’s… different.”
I sucked in a breath and considered what to say. “Well, I’m pretty passionate about games, I guess…”
He thought about this for a moment. “It’s just an unusual career path for—”
“A girl?” I interjected with a definite challenge to my tone.
He closed his eyes in shame and winced. “I didn’t mean it like that. It’s a pretty unusual career path in general, but yeah, I guess for a…” he cleared his throat, “woman, it seems even more surprising. Most women I know don’t give any time to that kind of thing.”
Taking note of the fact that he pointedly corrected me from “girl” to “woman,” I forged ahead. “There are plenty of women into gaming, I’ll have you know. But we make game apps. There isn’t any person living in the civilised world, man or woman, who doesn’t give some time to playing those on their phone these days, I assure you.”
“So, I’ll just put that in my sexist, old-fashioned pipe and smoke it, shall I?” he laughed.
I couldn’t help laughing too. At least he wasn’t denying his outdated views. “So, what do you do?” I looked him up and down, making sure it was obvious I was appraising his appearance as he had mine. “Let me guess,” I pondered. “You argue like a lawyer, but maybe that’s too cliché. Something in banking perhaps?” I tapped my finger to my chin to show I was thinking. “Hedge-fund Manager?”
Jonathan clutched a hand to his chest. “I’m insulted,” he gasped.
“Why? You look the part. Tailored suit, flashy watch, hair just so.”
He touched the side of his hair in a gesture that said thanks for noticing. Then his face turned serious. “So, because I dress nicely and look after myself, I must be what you obviously deem the lowest-of-the-low in the finance field?”
“And I’m a girl, so I can’t be interested in computer games?”
“Touché.”
I grinned. “So, seriously, what do you do?”
“I’m a lawyer.”
“I knew it! A hedge-fund lawyer?” I asked with a smirk.
He looked crestfallen. “No, a civil rights lawyer.”
Oh crap. There I was ripping him to shreds for the way he looked, and he’s all noble and shit. I swallowed hard. “Really?”
“No,” he laughed. “Not really.”
I released a sigh of relief.
“I’m an editor.”
I frowned, I didn’t see that coming. “Of a newspaper?”
Jonathan shook his head as he chuckled ruefully and sipped his coffee, leaving me waiting.
“What?” I challenged. “It was a legitimate question.”
“I was just amused by the way you’re determined to think the worst of me, that’s all.”
“I’m not.” I was close to breaking out in a sweat. This was not going at all how I’d hoped it would. “I just asked if you edited a newspaper that’s all.”
“Because in your mind, if I’m not a cliched lawyer, or a lowest-of-the-low hedge-fund manager, that only leaves journalism?”
My cheeks burned with shame and I wanted to disappear. “I didn’t mean it like that.”
Jonathan smiled. “I’m teasing you Bea. I’m an executive editor for a small publishing house. It’s nothing exciting, or noble, but I’m not the bad guy you seem to think I am.”
I closed my eyes and cursed myself for even coming today. “Fair enough, you win.” I conceded.
“I think we’re even.” Jonathan laughed heartily, and the tension between us broke again.

My Review:

I adore Kerry Heavens’ writing! So sexy and fresh.

This author captivated me with ‘Just Human’ series which I HIGHLY recommend if you haven’t read them. So I knew I would absolutely love this book. The author has a way with her characters that makes them so real and very relatable.

“Grief and guilt are kind of a double act. It’s normal to blame yourself in some way. But you can’t let it define you.”

Bea and Ziggy are two very unique main characters who have dealt with terrible adversity in their lives. Bea is in charge of a well-known company and is desperate for Ziggy to work for her. Well, work WITH her. They become fast friends as they are really kindred spirits. Bea doesn’t have the time or heart for dating even though a very sexy and handsome man is pursuing her.

“When I returned to my desk, I was still holding the jar of stars. I set it down and stared at it, seeing it in a completely new light. I thought I had captured him, but maybe he was setting me free.”

This story has a lot of heat and heart, just like the authors’ earlier books. The setting is modern and fast-paced and I loved the emotional attachment Bea and Ziggy formed. Even though they both resisted their romantic attraction, it was so beautiful when they finally got together.

I loved the ending!! Ziggy is an amazing hero and melted my heart. If you are looking for a sweet and sexy story that is very romantic and smart, then you will love ‘Lucky Scars’.

“You are the best thing to ever happen to me.”

(With thanks to the author for a review copy.)

@TheSpencerRyan exudes confidence,
I mean, have you seen him???
His dark good looks and tattooed muscled perfection are too much.
He’s hot. Lickably hot.
And he has a way with words that leaves me breathless.
But cocky doesn’t even cover it,
this guy is so arrogant you have to fight back.
But God he’s so lickable!
The thing is though,
he looks like sex but he’ll taste like jackass.

Spencer Excerpt 1

The sight and smell that greets me is just the same as it was yesterday. Bowls and utensils everywhere; and an incredible smell of chocolate and trays with neat lines of rolled truffles. Except today, I notice it. How did I miss all this crap yesterday, chocolate usually comes above everything!

Oh, but yesterday I was on a mission.

Drooling, I head around the counter and pick up a ball of chocolate from one of the trays, savouring it as the flavours explode in my mouth. Dark chocolate with some kind of boozy fruit flavour. God, it’s good.

And she did this?

She’s dangerous.

A woman who looks like her, thinks like her, wears those shoes, gives me shit and makes stuff like this, is a danger.

If I had a heart, I’d be falling in love.

I come to a big bowl of soft looking chocolate goo with a spatula sitting in it. I dip my finger in the gooey goodness and lift it to my mouth.

Holy hell! That is fucking amazing. It’s ginger and dark chocolate with some alcohol. Damn. I want to put my face in the bowl. I glance around, then shrug. Lifting the spatula out, with a decent scoop, I lean against the counter and take a good long lick.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” she barks as she comes into the kitchen.

“Just having a taste, Princess,” I reply, turning to let her see me take another lick.

She storms over, trying to grab the spatula out of my hand. Good luck with that sweetheart, this is me and chocolate. You ain’t getting it back.

“You can’t just wander in here whenever you feel like it.”

“The door was open.”

“Give that back!” she demands, catching hold of it. For a second we both pull at it, but then I see an opportunity and let go. Chocolate splatters her face, neck and chest and stops her dead in her tracks.

I choke on a laugh.

She looks at me, mouth open, “You did that on purpose!”

I shrug.

She glances down at the mess on her chest and my eyes follow, locking in on her begging nipples, visible through her dress. She looks embarrassed.

“It’s ok, Princess, I know they like me even if you don’t. Happens whenever I’m around.”

“It does not!”

“Mmmm-ok.”

I step closer. She backs off, but I catch her arm and pull her close.

“What are you doing?” she gasps.

“I don’t waste chocolate,” I reply softly and then lean in and swipe my tongue over her temple.

She wriggles, but it’s a weak effort. “Get off me,” she demands.

“Hold still, Princess, it’s all over you.” I take another lick at her cheek and move down to her neck.

“Ok, that’s enough,” she snaps, her breath catching in her throat as I suck in her earlobe.

I lick her neck just below her ear even though there’s no chocolate there and the way her head falls slightly back in surrender makes me swallow hard. “It’s never enough,” I murmur.

What the fuck?

I shake the sappy shit out of my head before I grow a vagina, and pluck the spatula out of her hand, painting a trail down her cleavage. Dropping the spatula on the floor, I grab her by the arse and lift her so that I can lick it all off. She yelps and struggles and I plonk her down on the kitchen counter, leaning forward and feasting on the stripe I painted between her breasts. Her dress is ruined, shame, I quite liked it.

About the Author

Kerry Heavens

‘I am what I am,’ as the song goes. ‘I don’t want praise, I don’t want pity. I bang my own drum, some think its a noise, I think its pretty. So what if I love each sparkle and each bangle. why not see things from a different angle? Your life is a shame ’til you can shout out, I am what I am.”

So here goes…I’m Kerry, I live with my family outside London. I am married to the love of my life and we have two amazing, beautiful children and a nutball Boston terrier, called Betty.

I graduated from the Surrey Institute of Art and Design with a degree in Fashion. I realised straight away that the industry wasn’t for me, so I’ve been creatively frustrated ever since. I have tried a bit of everything to satisfy my need for a creative outlet. Nothing keeps me happy for long. Until I discovered writing. Writing a book has always been a dream, but I had no clue where to start. Then one day, parking my car at the supermarket, Liv & Danny came to me like a thunderbolt. I don’t know where they came from, but I raced home and started making them real. Now I have two books to publish and lots more ideas to work on.

I am extremely prone to crushes on boys in books…on trains, in the street, wherever. From my early infatuation with Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing and Tom Cruise in Cocktail, to my recent obessions with book-boyfriends like Christian Grey, Travis Maddox and Kellan Kyle, I have always been the same. For the time it takes me to read a book I have an intense love affair with the characters, sometimes they stay with me for a week, sometimes its for life. Sometimes I feel like I will need therapy to cope with the fact that they are not real and will never be mine! Even though I am devoted to my husband, I’ll never change, not as long as brilliant, creative writers keep giving me deeply flawed, yet perfect men to love…
I hope, I dream, that these are the types of characters I can one day create to be obsessed over.

HOLIDAY SPOTLIGHT: DANNY from the JUST HUMAN Series by KERRY HEAVENS

December 23, 2013

holidaysdanny

Welcome to Day 2 of the Bellas’ Holiday Spotlight! Today we are beyond thrilled to welcome the amazingly sexy and sweet Danny from the JUST HUMAN series by Kerry Heavens, with an exclusive holiday message! Relax and enjoy!

DANNY
She looks beat standing in the doorway when I look up. Beat, but beautiful as always. “Hey.”
“Hey.”
“Did she go down ok?
“Yeah”, she nods. “No trouble.” A yawn seizes her and she runs her fingers through her hair showing her exhaustion. “Want tea?” she asks through her yawn.
“Sure,” I smile and begin to close down my programs. Liv turns and I watch her go, her black sweats hanging low on her hips, flashing me some soft, colorful skin. I sigh. She’s way too tired to entertain what I want to do to her. Hell, I’m too tired, but she does this to me. I can’t help it.
I stalk her into the kitchen and watch her for a moment filling the kettle. She switches it on and reaches up for mugs in the cupboard above. That’s all I can take, that flash of enticing skin becomes too much to resist and I step behind her, running my hands around her hips. I pull her close and lightly kiss the exposed skin of her neck.
Her sigh is almost a moan and she drops her head forward and rests her hands on the counter as she relaxes into the sensations. I slip my hands further under her shirt and up to her… “Fuck!” I mutter against her skin. “No bra?”
Liv giggles.
I knead her full breasts and pinch her nipples. “Oh,” she sighs and lifts her head up until its resting back on my shoulder. I kiss the spot below her ear and take her earlobe between my teeth as I slide one hand into the waist band of her sweats.
“Danny,” she sighs as if to stop me. “I still have presents to wrap.”
“Shhh,” I soothe. “I’ll do it later. I need you.” I carry on feeling my way into her panties, wait, “No panties? Come on!”
Her body shakes as she laughs, then she turns swiftly in my arms, pressing her lips to mine and winding her fingers into my hair. My lips part to let her tongue in and my hands find her ass, dragging her close so she can feel what she does to me. She moans into my mouth as I press against her. I push her sweats down and they pass her hips and drop straight to the floor. Then I lift her up and perch her on the edge of the counter.
I sink to my knees, parting her legs and letting her rest them on my shoulders. I glance up at her before I make my move and she smiles, stroking my face. My chest tightens as the overwhelming feeling I get each time I see her this way, hits me. It doesn’t get old, it doesn’t run out, it’s always there, that same way I’ve always felt when I look into her eyes. Like I’m home.
My lips curl into a smile and then I move. Keeping eye contact, I run my tongue inside her, all the way up, until I find her clit, then I suck. Her eyes close for a moment as she is gripped by sensation and she moans loud and long. When her eyes flicker open again I grin and start my assault. Over and over I plunge my tongue inside her, drinking her in and teasing her clit on each upward stroke.
She grips the edge of the counter and cries out with pleasure. It has been too long since she just let go, too long since I’ve made her scream my name. Damned Christmas and the bar and my parents coming in for the holidays tomorrow, have taken her away from me and we need this. I need this. I latch on to her clit again and slip two fingers inside her, sucking hard as my fingers brush against her magic spot.
“Ah!” She cries. I flick the tip of my tongue across her clit as I continue to suck and she grabs my hair and curses while her first orgasm rolls through her. I get to my feet, kissing her deeply and picking her up. I turn us to the huge kitchen table behind me and put her down on the surface. Urging her to lay down, I shove some wrapping paper aside.
I unbutton my jeans and quickly free myself of them. Then pulling my shirt over my head and flinging it away, I climb onto the table over her. I slide her more into the middle of the table so that I can settle between her legs and send paper and gifts sprawling onto the floor. The muffled sound of breaking glass inside a box can be heard as it all hits the floor.
Liv, wraps her arms around my neck, while my knees nudge her thighs apart. “You owe my mum a vase,” she gasps before I slide my tongue between her lips for a brief kiss.
“I’ll head out first thing…” I pant, positioning myself against her heat. “…Buy her the whole fucking store.” I surge forward. “Fuck, Liv. You’re so wet!” I groan as I sink all the way inside her. She lifts up to meet my thrusts, needing this as much as I do and we find a rhythm. Her hands roaming all over my back, gripping me tight, holding me close while I drive into her.
The noises she makes make me fucking crazy and I try desperately not to end this too soon, but she won’t stop. I need her to say my name, I need to hear it when she comes. I shift higher and drop to my elbows, pressing our bodies together and causing that friction she needs to get off. I push further into her, finding that little extra depth and grinding against her clit. I’m not going to last.
Reading her signals with perfect clarity, I know she is almost there. I want to give her more, but can’t stop and I can’t risk breaking the perfect connection we have right now, so instead I bite down on her shoulder, and thrust hard inside her. She curses loudly, but it does the job, “DANNY!” She cries as her insides grip me and her back arches off the table. I’m right there with her, two more thrusts and I’m moaning her name as I come hard inside her.
Our foreheads are pressed together as we lay panting, sweating on our kitchen table. I attempt to move and she stops me. “Thank you,’ she whispers and kisses me tenderly. “I needed that.”
“We both did.” I agree.
Just then Willow’s cry comes over the baby monitor and we both laugh.
“I’ll go,” I say kissing her as I slowly pull out of her. I get to my feet and search for my underwear. Liv giggles as I pull them up and points to my arm, where I have a piece of wrapping paper stuck to my elbow. I drag my shirt over my head and lean over the table to kiss her again. “Give me five minutes and I’ll come help you with this stuff.”
“Ok,” she smiles.
I take the stairs two at a time, hating to hear her in distress. Hey, I’m a sucker for my princess, I’ll own it! I start to soothe her before I even reach the top of the second flight of stairs. “It’s ok, Daddy’s coming.” I push open the door and cross the room, scooping her up and pressing her against my chest, “shhhh, it’s ok. I’m here, I’m here.”
She settles instantly and starts to breathe softly in my ear. I rock gently for a minute or two, knowing if I try to put her down, she’ll wake. So I decide to settle her on our bed instead. I lay down with her on my chest. Stroking her fine hair and whispering comfort to her. Her breathing settles into a deeper pattern and her warmth against me is relaxing. I’d stay here for an eternity, but I’ll just give her five more minutes.
I love this time with her, just me and my princess, totally relaxed holding her close…

…That’s where Liv finds us an hour later.

Have a fantastic Christmas everyone!

REVIEW

After the major cliffy in Just Human, I couldn’t wait to devour the continuation of Danny and Liv’s story in Still Human! And what a gorgeously written sequel it is. I absolutely love Liv and Danny. And they have the best friends ever. They are so insecure and there are so many misunderstandings between them, that I was a wreck hoping they would both find a way to be together. Soul mates, right? Without any spoilers, I want to say that Danny is my next husband (LOVE him!) and Liv could be a great best friend. Still Human is loving and hot and sexy and romantic and has plenty of drama, too. And the covers of Being Human and Still Human are among my favorite book covers, ever. Kerry Heavens has a gift for storytelling and effortlessly switches between Danny and Liv’s POV. I highly recommend getting to know Danny and Liv! You will totally fall in love with both of them.

Excerpt

Scott is up, dressed and looking particularly chipper when I arrive laden down with groceries.
“Wow! You realise it’s A.M. right?” I rib as I put the groceries down.
“Yeah, yeah,” he dismisses.
“So how are you?” asks Jen with her well-rehearsed tone.
“I’m doing okay,” I say, trying not to brush her off. I know she is worried about me, but I can’t do what she wants me to do. I’m not chasing Liv. Jen has tried cajoling, nagging, yelling and crying. There is only bribery left, but she seems to have risen above that. She wants me to be happy, but she is wrong about how I can achieve that. I should have left the whole thing alone. But I went against my gut and this is the result. I won’t make that mistake again. I’m staying put. Screw Liv.
“Working hard?’ Jen asks, this is more of an accusation.
“Yes,” I say like a sulky teen. “But it’s what I need right now. Anyway, I need the money…I’ve a huge credit card bill to pay.” I joke, referring to the ring. But there is little humor to be found, even when the joke is my own. I sigh. How did I become the guy with two unwanted engagement rings to his name?
Jen doesn’t push further.
“So whose turn is it to cook?” I ask, knowing full well it’s mine, I’m just trying to change the subject. Jen rolls her eyes and sets about making coffee. Scott takes the morning papers over to the table, his usual position. I’ve no idea when he became exempt from cooking, but Jen and I take turns.
I get on with mixing the batter, it’s second nature now, and Jen and I move about the kitchen in perfect sync with one another. I wonder distantly, how I thought it would be easy to give this up and move. I love these guys.
We make Scott do all the donkey work after breakfast; it’s only fair that he cleans up. Jen and I poke fun at him for our own amusement, from where we sit in the garden.
“I’m just not used to seeing him this alert on a Saturday morning,” I tease.
“We went for a walk on the beach this morning,” Jen says with a knowing look. “We had stuff to talk about.”
“And?” I ask, knowing full well the subject they needed to discuss. They have been back and forth all week on this sperm donor thing. I know Jen is terrified, but Scott sees it as no big deal and just wants to get on with it. I really admire the guy; hell, it’s quite a dent in the old masculinity. But as far as he is concerned, it’s just a blip. Any child that is conceived as a result would be his and his alone. Jen has just read one bad example and it has her all in knots. She’s worried that Scott won’t feel connected to the baby and she’ll be left all alone. That just wouldn’t happen.
Scott joins us just then and they smile at each other. “I talked her around,” Scott says, never taking his eyes off Jen as he sits beside her. God, he loves her.
“That’s great!’ I exclaim and put my arms around Jen lifting her slightly out of her chair. “So what happens now?”
“Well…we start looking,” she says with a nervous smile. “It’s a long process and we need a few months to figure out my ovulation issues.”
Okay, here goes. I can’t handle any more rejection this week. “I don’t know the best way to approach this,” I say, looking them in the eye in turn. “But, when you’re ready, I was hoping you would consider me.”

Synopsis:

Danny and Liv are back…

Danny loves Liv. He knows he loves her more than she loves him because she ran without a word when she saw their future mapped out before her. He knows he will never love anyone like he loved her and this time he doesn’t think he can move on.

Liv loves Danny. She knows she loves him more than he loves her because he broke her heart in the worst possible way, right when things were falling into place. She knows she will never love anyone like she loves him and this time she doesn’t think she can move on.

They needed a second chance because they just weren’t ready for their first, but when events changed everything between them, they discovered they were just human after all. Now Liv and Danny have to find a way to survive being hurt by each other.

They doubted, they underestimated and they did believe the worst, but only because they were too young the first time and too vulnerable the second time. But now they have changed and if they are not the same, surely things can only turn out differently?

Prologue

Liv

“Please Liv, you have to eat something,” begs Max.
I tighten the covers around me. I’m not hungry, but I keep quiet. If I speak, even about food, he’ll think I’m ready to talk. There’s nothing else to say. I poured it all out when I got home and there’s nothing left. He stayed with me all night, held me tight while I cried and now he is fussing around. He wanted to call everyone to tell them I was safe. But I warned him not to call Danny. I said he could let Mum know I was okay but that was it. No details and under no circumstances were any of them to make any contact with Danny either. I can just imagine Mum and Grace as vigilantes and, while I want him to hurt, he isn’t worth it.
“I’m going down to check on things, I’ll bring you something up anyway.” He says quietly. I don’t respond.
In the silence of my flat, my ears ring. I hate silence, I always have and without thinking I get out of bed, wrapping myself in a blanket, and sit in front of the TV. I find a film on a movie channel I’ve seen before and sit and ignore it. It’s better than the deafening silence. Now that I’m upright, I ponder what to do next. I know I have to pull myself together today, Connie is flying home. Ugh! She won’t let me just wallow, she’ll make me talk. I need to get up, shower and go to work. Keeping busy is my only option, it’ll keep people off my back.
As I adjust the temperature of the shower, I examine my options. I don’t really have any. It’s not like life was going well before I allowed Danny to walk in and screw me over. I have to just try my hardest to get back to normal as quickly as possible. I should have trusted my instincts. Danny was just human after all, hurting me was almost inevitable. Sadly, I knew that but the naive teenager in me just got sucked in for old time’s sake. I knew this would happen, I was safer with Mark, at least I could take that on the chin.
Max is waiting when I come out of the bedroom dressed for work.
“I brought you some coffee and…” He starts as he turns to me. His face falls as he sees me. “Liv, you’re not going to work?”
I walk across to where he is sitting and pick up my coffee. Taking a sip, I smile a tiny smile and sit beside him.
“What should I do then?” I ask softly.
“We have it all covered downstairs. You need to sort your head out.”
“I’m not going to do that here, trust me. I need the distraction.” I put my hand on his knee. “Thank you for looking after me, but I have to get back down there before I drive myself insane.”
He sighs. “Well, you aren’t going anywhere until you eat something.” He holds up a muffin on a plate.
I smile sweetly and dutifully take the muffin. Then, with some physical effort, I force some down. I may as well start now, Connie will be much harder to deal with.
Satisfied, Max sits back and seems to relax slightly. I can hear his cogs turning though and I know he wants to talk. So when he parts his lips to say whatever it is I know I don’t want to hear, I say “I don’t want to talk about it.” Then, getting to my feet, I take the coffee and the muffin and go to the door.
“Coming?” I ask innocently as I head down to the diner.

Danny

Jen places a coffee on my nightstand and sits on the edge of the bed. “If they know any more, they’re not saying,” she says softly.
She was just on the phone with Liv’s sister, trying to get more information. But I know all I need to know. They found the note last night when they got back; it said she was going home.
It didn’t say why, but I know.
She doesn’t love me.
She found out I was going to propose and she ran.
Again.
Last night after the dust settled, Jen found the ring bag screwed up in the trash. I’d left it out on the counter when I went to go meet Liv at the party and it doesn’t take a genius to see what happened. Liv came back just after I left, saw the bag, figured it out, freaked and then packed her things and left.
Scott and Jen left me alone last night, but only after I insisted. Jen came back first thing this morning though, to make sure I was okay. She wants me to get up and go over to Grace’s to find out what they know, but I don’t want to hear it. I can’t face their pity and I’m too angry to see Connie. This is all her fault. Liv and I were getting on with our lives quite happily until she interfered. Now I’m left with that old open wound and I have to start getting over her again. Except this time, I don’t think I can.
“Danny, come on, drink your coffee,” Jen urges. Reluctantly, I sit up and take a sip.
“Thanks,” I say distantly.
“So what are you going to do now?”
“Nothing,” I tell her.
She watches me as I drink, until I can’t take it any longer. I throw the covers off and get up.
“Are you going over there?” she asks hopefully.
I turn and see her optimistic face. “No,” I say firmly. “I have unpacking to do.”
“Danny! You can’t just give up.”
“Why not?” I scoff. “She has.”

Excerpt:

“I’ve got another trick like that. I’ll show you sometime,” she says with a wicked smile.
“Hmmm.” I turn onto my front so that our faces are almost touching. “I can’t wait.”
“I have to move,” she sighs, not moving at all.
I watch her, having an internal battle, then reluctantly, she drags herself up and disappears to the bathroom. I grin to myself; I’m a lucky guy.
I am almost asleep when she returns.
“Hey!” she exclaims, slapping my bare butt. “You’re sleeping!”
“No I’m not.” I grin, closing my eyes tighter. She pokes my side, I ignore it. She climbs on top of me, I ignore that too. Then she tickles me, she has me pinned, so she has the advantage for a moment and I can’t help my laughter as I fight to defend myself. But then I manage to take back control and I turn the tables on her, while she shrieks with laughter. I notice with slight disappointment that she has underwear on.
“Hey, why did you put panties on?”
“Panties,” she says, testing the word. “I love the way you say that.”
“How else would I say it?”
“Knickers,” she says bluntly. So British. “I love that way you say it.” She smiles. “And I love you.”
I sink back down beside her. “I’m going to miss you, even if it’s only for a few days.”
“I’ll miss you too, but you should spend some time with Jen and your parents before you come back, I’ll get in the way of that. Besides I have a feeling the baby will come soon, Andy says Grace is the size of a house!” She laughs at the thought of that. From what I remember of Grace, I imagine she’s a nightmare pregnant.
Liv sits up. “Come on, let’s have a shower.”
I drop my head back onto the bed. How can she be so energetic?
“Come on,” she calls from the door.
I wave my hand dismissively.
“I’ll be right behind you,” I say to humour her. I so don’t want to get up, I think I might just stay here a while. From the dresser, my cell rings. I sigh and reluctantly drag myself off the bed.
I groan when I see the caller ID. It’s Brooke. Why is she calling? I reject the call. I’m sure I’ll find out what she wants when I get back. I just know she won’t have good intentions and I won’t have her ruin this for me. I think back to Jen and Scott warning me off her in the beginning. Jen in particular has always detested her, and I ignored them…what harm could friends with benefits do? Except, without the benefits, I don’t think I would want to be friends. Liv has given me the clarity to see that Brooke has been a huge lack of judgement on my part. Now I just have to make sure that Brooke gets the message and keeps away from me from now on.
