At the stadium’s
concession stand, I took a tall stool, putting Georgina and I at eye level
since she stood. “So, why didn’t you kiss François?” I asked. “Bad breath?”
She gasped
into her hand. “My breath is fine.”
“I meant
his. I’m sure yours is pure relish on a hotdog.”
She made a
face. “Gross.”
“I happen
to love relish,” I said. “But does François?”
Each time I
said François with flourish, she
flinched. I didn’t care. Something about him bugged me—I just couldn’t put my
finger on it.
“We didn’t
kiss because you interrupted us,” she pointed out.
“So? If I
were in his position, and we both wanted that kiss, I wouldn’t let anyone stop
me.”
“Frank and I are clicking,” she said,
scowling. “There was even mention of spending time at his summerhouse.”
“Hamptons?”
She coughed
into her fist. “Boca Raton.”
The idea of
Georgina spending a summer with him in Boca Raton was tragic enough that I
almost smiled. I got the sense she was playing up the date. If it was so great,
why wasn’t she sitting here with him? And why was I more relieved than smug
about that? “Meanwhile, Justin and I will be clamming in Montauk.”
“You two
should really just make it official and announce your love to the world.”
“But then I
wouldn’t get to flirt with pretty girls.”
“For
someone who pretends to have as much game as you,” she said, “I still haven’t
seen you successfully flirt with any
girls since I’ve known you.”
I smirked.
“How do you know I’m not flirting with you right now?”

SYNOPSIS:

The final book in the Something in the Way series, a love saga.

Manning and I have what happily-ever-after is made of . . .

A home he built us on the unshakeable foundation we fought for.
A life of laughter carved out of heartache and betrayal.
A love story to stand the test of time.

But between a trust that can’t be broken, joy that can’t be bridled, and passion that would scorch the sun, the empty spaces are becoming more and more difficult to ignore . . .

Fears that keep Manning up at night as he slips from our bed.
Our complicated relationship with a man he respects and one I don’t know how to forgive.
And a sprawling, beautiful home with one small room I’m afraid I’ll never be able to fill.

Manning and I have what happily-ever-after is made of . . .

But I’ll beg the heavens for just one thing more.

Lake + Manning is book four in the Something in the Way series, a love saga.

MY REVIEW:

4.5 Epic Stars!!

“Was love alone enough?”

If you haven’t yet started this series, drop what you’re doing and start right now!! Lake and Manning’s story is THAT GOOD. And this final book is more of an extended epilogue to their magnificent love story. But it is perfect for them and it works on every level.

Lake is a grown woman now with a career and the man of her dreams and everything she could ask for. Excerpt one thing. And she is afraid it will come between her and Manning and her heart breaks and the thought of him not having everything he ever dreamed of. All of the characters make an appearance in this story and I loved how the author treated each and every one of them. No one ever stays the same and she allowed all of her characters including Lake and Manning to grow, mature and evolve. Will Lake and Manning find the happily ever after they both so desperately deserve?

“I burned you, my star, right here on my fucking skin. You have already given me the world. The goddamn universe.”

The ending of this book completely took me by surprise and the author deserves all the praise for this beautiful conclusion to Lake and Manning’s saga. If you are in the mood for an epic, unputdownable sexy romance, then do not miss this series!

“Life is not that good,” I said. “It can’t be.”

“It can. It is.”

EXCERPT:

I found Manning waiting at the base of the porch steps with Blue, looking every inch a man in jeans and fishing boots, the porch swing’s floral printed cushions under one arm. Any fears I had vanished. This was about the man I loved, a man both tough and sensitive, determined but attentive.

“Why are you wearing galoshes?” I asked, taking his outstretched hand. I started for his truck but he pulled me around the side of the house, toward the back. “And what’re the cushions for?”

“Guess,” he said.

Manning and I had explored the woods behind the house plenty of times. Usually we went back there for two reasons—to walk Blue, or to go on the lake. Neither of those seemed like great after-dark activities. “I’m stumped,” I said.

As we crossed from our backyard into the woods, Manning kept me close with an arm around my shoulders. Blue darted through the trees but always sprinted back when we whistled for her. Perhaps if I’d been anywhere except the place I called home, I might’ve been spooked by the cover of darkness. By the rustling bushes, or the haunting hoots and flapping of wings echoing around us. Instead, I snuggled into the side of the man I knew would kill to protect me or die trying.

The closer we got to the edge of the forest, the more convinced I was that Manning had lost his mind and decided to recreate the night we’d snuck out of camp, gone for a drive, and wound up in the water.

The woods spit us out into a clearing that opened up to a tiny lake we’d come to know well. It was shallow, mostly off the map, and small enough for us to drift aimlessly. Manning kept the first dinghy he’d ever made there, tied to a stake in the ground. He’d built other boats—some he’d sold, and with help, a larger one we kept at one of Big Bear Lake’s marinas—but we had this little slice of heaven all to ourselves most of the time.

“We’re going on the lake?” I asked.

“Bingo,” he replied. “Go on. Climb on over the starboard side.” Manning winked before he added, “And into my lap.” It was the same thing he’d said to me my first night at the house in Big Bear.

No matter how endearing his invitation, I stayed where I was. We’d made love in this boat. I’d laughed until my sides had ached watching Manning try and fail to catch a fish with his hands. We’d drifted around in it on hot afternoons eating orange slices as the sun had set. But we’d certainly never taken it out at night.

Blue whined, probably sensing she was about to get left behind. “Blue and I are going to need a bit of an explanation before we proceed,” I said.

He squatted to untie the boat, and I heard the smile in his voice. “What’s wrong? Don’t trust me?”

“To steer this thing in the dark?”

“The stars are out.” He gestured up at the sky. “They’ll guide us, Birdy.”

“Actually,” I said, hands on my hips, “it’s a crescent moon and particularly dark tonight.”

“I know,” he said. “I wish I could say I planned it that way, but we just got lucky.”

Warily, I climbed over the starboard side and set up both cushions. Once I was seated at the bow, he pushed the boat through the weeds and waded in after it.

“Stay,” he told Blue.

She barked once to get her point across but plopped down at the edge of the lake, watching us go as she had many times before.

“Where are we headed?” I asked once Manning had climbed in.

“To the middle.” Slowly, he rowed us out on the water. As the night spread around us, complete stillness punctuated by occasional splashes and croaks, I began to wonder if the journey was the destination. Though Manning and I had planned a fairly low-key weekend, there was no getting around the chaos that came with having friends and family in one place. It’d been days, maybe even weeks, since I’d experienced this kind of stillness and peace.

“Okay, this was a good idea,” I admitted, shutting my eyes and relaxing against the back of the boat to enjoy the warm breeze.

“We’re here,” he said.

I opened my eyes. “Where’s here?”

“Middle of the lake. Best spot to see the show.” He reached for me. “Come.”

Taking his hand, I let him guide me forward to sit between his legs.

He enveloped me, hugging my back to his chest. “Look up.”

I relaxed against him, resting my arms on his as I scanned the countless stars. In the pitch black, they shone especially bright. “They’re beautiful,” I said.

“You know I’ll always move the stars for you if need be,” he said. “Whatever it takes.”

Though I appreciated the warmth behind his words, wasn’t it possible some fates couldn’t be rearranged? The vastness of the black sky and the sheer number of stars overhead made me feel small and insignificant—but not in a bad way. Did the universe have plans for us? Or had Manning and I really defined our own destiny? And what did either of those realities mean for our future?

Manning bent his mouth to my ear. “Lake?” he asked.

“Hmm?”

“Did you hear me?”

Whatever it takes. It occurred to me as we sat under the glittering stars that Manning would do anything in his power to move them in our favor—but what would it do to him if he couldn’t?

Review: MOVE THE STARS (SOMETHING IN THE WAY #3) by JESSICA HAWKINS

October 27, 2017

Synopsis:

It was a hot summer day when I met him on the construction site next to my parents’ house. If I’d known then what I do now, would I have kept on walking? Manning was older, darker, experienced—and I’d trusted him when he said the story would only ever be about us. I’d held those words close and challenged fate, but I had lost.

A part of me is still that sixteen-year-old girl squinting up at Manning, but no matter how far I fall or high I soar, I’ll always be a bird without her bear and nothing without him.

Manning
When I close my eyes, I can no longer see her. The decisions I made were to push Lake in the right direction—away from me. But now that she’s gone, would I have made those same choices?

I’d walked away like I was supposed to. I’d kept my distance. I’d bent over backward to keep Lake pure, but she’s no longer that girl, and I don’t know if I can stay away anymore. I only know I don’t want to. She’s still everything I want and nothing I should ever have, but if anyone can move the stars, it’s her great bear in the sky.

My Review:

4.5 EPIC STARS!!

OMG what do I read now?! My heart is FILLED with Lake and Manning. A truly epic and passionate series. A must-read!

“You wanted me to move on, so I did, and I no longer need you. You can’t have it both ways.”

All the love to Jessica Hawkins for crafting an unforgettable and heart-wrenching love story. This series spans decades and is truly one of my favorite contemporary romance sagas ever. Lake and Manning have an emotional connection that is stunning, heartbreaking and simply beautiful.

How to write a review that is completely spoiler-free? Just know that this series kept me up many nights reading because I just had to know how Lake and Manning’s epic journey was going to end. From two completely different worlds, these two only ever needed each other. Even if real life constantly got in their way.

“I didn’t know it would turn out this way, Lake. Your life, and mine, nothing is how I thought it would be.”

I literally read the books in this series back to back, and honestly had no clue where the author would take me as a reader. Ms. Hawkins stayed true to her main characters and developed the secondary characters perfectly. Dare I say that Tiffany was misunderstood? And that I would love to see a story based around her as well as Corbin? (But not together!) But this is Manning and Lake’s story and I lived and breathed them for every page of this gorgeous story. Angst, joy, true love, heartbreak, despair – this series has it all and then some.

“These are the pieces, and they might not look like much to you, but they’re all I have. I’ve found a way to be happy. You can’t come back into my life and tell me it’s a mess when you’re the one who created it.”

Manning is one of THE sexiest and most unforgettable main characters I’ve ever read. The self-sacrifice and heartache he endures is almost unbearable! And I literally felt as if I was THERE during the New York City scenes.

“I thought I’d never have you, Lake, you have to understand that. I thought there was no chance. That people like me didn’t get a life like this.”

Jessica Hawkins doesn’t take any shortcuts and it shows in her writing. Nothing in this series felt rushed, forced or left undone. Every event felt necessary and fit perfectly. This is not an easy story to read – there is heartache, cheating, and tons of angst – but it was gripping and completely satisfying. If you love an adult, very sexy story with real depth and brutal honesty, then don’t miss this series. And now I might actually have to do a re-read!

“You and me, we’re you and me. Nobody’s earned the right to know our story.”

The First Taste by Jessica Hawkins

Series: Slip of the Tongue #2
Release Date: August 4th, 2016
Genre: Contemporary Romance

The First Taste Ebook Cover.jpg

Synopsis:

Andrew Beckwith has already devoted his life to one girl—and as far as he’s concerned, she’s all he needs. The rough-around-the-edges bad boy left his reckless ways behind six years ago when his daughter Bell was born. To the female population’s dismay, he’s unapologetically single. When Bell’s mother walked out on them years ago, he vowed never to let another woman close enough to hurt them again.

Amelia Van Ecken isn’t just another woman. She’s an independent, smart, and savvy businesswoman who doesn’t have time for sex, much less love. In the midst of a drawn-out, bitter divorce, all she wants is to bury herself in work. But when sharp-tongued Amelia and stubborn Andrew cross paths, sparks fly—and burn. Two things are obvious in an instant: they want each other, and they’re from different worlds. It’s the perfect formula for an off-the-charts one-night stand. After all, it’s not as if opposites ever attract.

My Review:

The First Taste features Andrew, a single dad from Slip of the Tongue, one of my favorite books. His story is a standalone, and does NOT feature any forbidden romance. Andrew is the complete opposite of Amelia, the boss of his sister and a total Type-A workaholic. She has been burned by a painful split from her husband and is going through a very difficult divorce. Amelia and Andrew make is clear from the start they are both only looking for a one-night stand, with no strings attached. Andrew does not suffer from lack of women, that’s for sure – he’s totally hot, has his own business and has an adorable daughter named Bell, who is raising on his own.

They are both completely honest with each other from the start but begin to develop a deeper connection. Their emotional relationship develops slowly, even though they both are wary of getting close. Amelia is stunning, smart and self-sufficient, Never in a million years does she think she could ever fall for a man like Andrew! And Andrew’s daughter comes first, even while it becomes obvious his daughter would love for him to fall in love. I loved that Andrew was the one who actually starts to realize that he is falling in love with Amelia and wants more from her.

Somewhere along the way, she became worth it to me. The threat of pain that comes with keeping her in my life—it’s not enough to scare me away. In fact, it’s the threat of competition that stokes a fire in me. It makes me want to put up a fight.

The First Taste is a classic opposites-attract story, filled with real emotion and characters that have depth and honesty. Jessica Hawkins is great at writing uber-sexy men and Andrew is not only gorgeous and tatted, he is a VERY giving lover. The sexy times in The First Taste are without a doubt some of the steamiest around.

“I want to undress you, stretch you out on my bed, fingers to toes. Your hair splayed on my pillow and I want to take you over and over until you can’t handle it another second.”

I love stories with single dads and while this story did not pack as much of an emotional punch as Slip of the Tongue, I still loved the story and the way Amelia and Andrew’s relationship grew and developed. This is a fast and sexy read from an incredibly talented writer and I can’t wait to read what’s next!!

“Have I ever mentioned how it feels when I’m the reason for your smile? Like a million bucks.”

Slip of the Tongue is absolutely enthralling. Jessica Hawkins continues to be one of the most underrated contemporary romance authors today. I ADORED this book!!!

I am personally a fan of love triangles in books – I know, a little strange, but I love the emotion, the forbidden-love aspect and and the thrill of it all. So if you are not a fan, then this book is probably not for you. Sadie has been married to an amazing man who has suddenly and inexplicably shut down. Nathan has stopped communicating with Sadie, seems to not want her anymore, and pretty much just shuts her out. She tries to get through to him, to no avail. Enter sexy neighbor Finn, who is smart, sweet, and makes his intentions very clear from the start.

I have LOVED this author’s writing ever since I read her Cityscape series (which I highly recommend.) Ms. Hawkins made me FEEL Sadie’s insecurities, her inner battles and her fear of losing her husband and I felt like I was on an emotional roller coaster from the first page of this book. This is a very adult and very passionate book where not all is black-and-white. Yes, Nathan seems perfect and yes, Sadie makes some mistakes, but she is human and I found the story to be very believable. I loved Finn and could see why Sadie was so conflicted. She love her husband but feels like her marriage is over. All of the characters in this book are incredibly well written and I connected with them from the start.

Finn and Sadie have explosive chemistry AND so do Sadie and Nathan! The sex scenes are absolutely incredible. I loved everything about this book and loved the conclusion. Kudos to Jessica Hawkins for another incredibly sexy and addictive story.

Excerpt

In his dimly-lit kitchen, Finn lays a comforting hand on my shoulder. “I have to tell you something.”

My hairline prickles. I can sense whatever he says will be heavy, and I’m not sure I want to hear it. I force a crooked smile that probably looks as awkward as I feel. Since I just fed Ginger, I joke, “What? I smell like dog food?”

“I want to kiss you,” he says without missing a beat. “I won’t, but I just thought you should know.”

My stomach drops as if I’m in free fall. I bite my lip involuntarily, then release it, afraid it’ll look like an invitation. Can he really come out and say that? Without prompting, without wavering? You can want to kiss someone and not say it. Should I be angry he confessed that? I’m not. I’m curious. Stirred, even. And because we’re being honest, I ask what I want to ask. “Why?”

“Why do I want to kiss you? Or why did I tell you?”

My heart rate picks up. I lose my nerve. “The second one. That’s not the kind of thing you just come out and say to a stranger. A married stranger.”

“I like you.” He absentmindedly caresses the nape of my neck with his fingertip. “So I want to be honest.”

I put my hand over his wrist, and he stops. Now, and for the last hour, it’s as if we’re the only two people on the planet. The Bad Wife and the Stranger. If I let him kiss me, nobody would ever know. After all, Nathan might be kissing someone else too. Why else would he have lipstick on his tie? Finn doesn’t wear lipstick. Neither do I. It would be our secret.

“You’re leaving, aren’t you?” he asks.

Am I? I have to. I don’t trust myself to stay, and I don’t trust myself to speak, so I nod. I don’t have to pull his hand away. He takes it back willingly. And he walks me to his door.

After spending two hours outdoors getting my headshots taken by Finn, I slide into the backseat of the Uber with Finn, grateful to be back inside. He puts an arm around my shoulders and draws me to him. “Cold?”

I should pull away. Once I have it, though, his warmth is impossible to reject and feels as necessary as breathing. “A little.”

He squeezes me closer. Moves his hand up and down my bicep. “You’re shivering.”

The driver looks at us in the rearview mirror. “You guys are a cute couple.”

“Thanks,” I say.

Finn arches an eyebrow, pleased—because she thinks we’re together, or because I didn’t correct her? I don’t even want to correct her. I’ve missed the look she’s giving us, the one a woman makes when she’s more envious than jealous. I get it all the time with Nathan. That feeling, coupled with the heater blasting from the front seat, leaves me slightly woozy.

We’re just like actors in a movie, I tell myself. This isn’t real. It doesn’t count. After a few minutes, the urgency to get warm lessens, and the door opens to another less pressing, but still basic need. Because that’s how my arousal feels—essential. The more it’s ignored, the fiercer it grows. I snuggle into his side. All it takes is his hand on my upper thigh to invite an assault of graphic fantasies. Finn shoving me down on the backseat because he can’t control himself anymore. Thrusting his fingers under the hem of my dress to find me ready for him. The lower half of my body aches with sudden demands.

“Some of those photos we just took were for me,” he whispers in my ear. He couldn’t have chosen a worse moment to tease me. My legs are jelly-like. “Does that make you mad?”

I check to see if the driver is paying attention. She must know I’m married. How can something so vital and concrete in my life be hidden? “What if I say yes?” I ask.

“I’ll delete them. If you’re sure it doesn’t . . . turn you on.”

I try not to pant. “Why would it?”

“Imagining me looking at them later.”

I turn my head. Our mouths are a breath apart. One more inch, and they’ll touch. Again. Those lips are the color of sunburnt rock but whisper soft. We’ve done it once. Would one more kiss hurt? I can’t stop the image of him looking at me, my exposed, white throat on his computer, his cock in a firm fist. It should disgust me. It makes my panties damp instead.

“No response necessary,” he says as the car pulls up to the curb. “I can read it on your face.”

Synopsis

With their dream within grasp, Johnny and Lola make an offer on Hey Joe–only to discover that a million dollars doesn’t go as far as they’d thought. As the price of the bar rises and expenses pile up, Lola begins to question what she really wants.

Lola knows she can solve their problems with one phone call, but she may risk going too far to have it all. Because she’s not dealing with just anyone–she’s dealing with a master. For Beau Olivier, there’s no such thing as too far. There is only conquest. There is only victory.

Beau and Lola already had their night together, but it wasn’t enough. They need more. And the more they need. The more they have to lose.
