MY REVIEW:
I was already a fan of Demi Moore but I never expected her story – which I though I knew – to be so powerful and so tragic. Her story holds lessons for all of us, no matter where we come from or where we are going in life. To say that she has overcome a lot is an understatement. After listening to the outstanding audio book, narrated by the author herself, I can honestly say that I am surprised she is still alive.
“My story is mine alone. I’m the only one who was there for all of it, and I decided to claim the power to tell it on my own terms.”
This book gave me insight into the horrible way in which the tabloids hound public figures and publish complete falsehoods about them and their families. Demi has lived with publicity almost her entire life, and it has affected her relationships with her mother, her husbands and her own children. But she takes control of her life with this story and wow, what a life she has led!
Demi had a truly heartbreaking relationship with her parents and in particular with her mother. Demi’s unstable childhood shaped her adulthood, but she has battled her entire life to rise above all of the hardships and dysfunctional family relationships she has endured.
This seems to be a brutally honest story, stripped of all pretense. Demi is very forthcoming about her struggles with addiction and her insecurities. You can have all the adulation in the world, but if you don’t feel worthy of love, then all of that is completely meaningless. She touches on her husbands, her family and her children. This is both a tragic but uplifting story about fame, drugs, alcohol and infidelity.

I appreciated that Demi never portrays herself as a victim but more of a survivor. I am glad that she repaired her broken relationships with her children and seems to have taken control of her life. I highly recommend the audio book version because listened to Demi’s own voice was an absolutely pleasure. I applaud her courage for telling this very real and honest story.
