Thank you to Celadon Books for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
đđŠđłđ€đ¶đłđș is about the Joseph family who own a roofing business in the small town of Mercury, Pennsylvania. One day young Marley moves to town with her mother. One of the Joseph sons, Baylor, sets his sights on her but Marley eventually winds up with his brother, Waylon.
While many readers have described this book as a complex and moving family saga, I am in the minority on the one. For me, it felt as though there was a lot of tell not show and the slow burn pace did not fully hold my attention. I love family drama, but I found many of the characters underdeveloped and often unlikeable. I alternated between listening to the audiobook and reading. While the narrator was very capable, it was very hard to keep the points of view straight while listening.
There is also an element of mystery here with the discovery of a body in the roof of the local church. While I loved the development of Marleyâs character, my attention did wander during the book. Every book is not for every reader which is fine! If youâve read this one, Iâd love to know your thoughts!
About the Book:
A roofing familyâs bonds of loyalty are tested when they uncover a long-hidden secret at the heart of their blue-collar townâfrom Amy Jo Burns, author of the critically acclaimed novel Shiner
Itâs 1990 and seventeen-year-old Marley West is blazing into the river valley town of Mercury, Pennsylvania. A perpetual loner, she seeks a place at someoneâs table and a family of her own. The first thing she sees when she arrives in town is three men standing on a rooftop. Their silhouettes blot out the sun.
The Joseph brothers become Marleyâs whole world before she can blink. Soon, she is young wife to one, The One Who Got Away to another, and adopted mother to them all. As their own mother fades away and their roofing business crumbles under the weight of their unwieldy fatherâs inflated ego, Marley steps in to shepherd these unruly men. Years later, an eerie discovery in the church attic causes old wounds to resurface and suddenly the familyâs survival hangs in the balance. With Marley as their light, the Joseph brothers must decide whether they can save the family theyâve always knownâor whether together they can build something stronger in its place.
