SYNOPSIS:
The only person poetry-loving Cali Monroe hates more than herself is Logan Waters, the geeky kid who lives in the dorm building next to hers. Ever since Cali’s parents told her she would amount to nothing, she has felt entirely inadequate. Friendless and alone, she takes on the mean girl role in hopes it will make her feel better–and Logan serves as the perfect target. He infuriates her with his obnoxiously long lashes, his all too perfect dimpled smile, and his complete lack of personality outside of his intelligence. It doesn’t hurt that he’s part of the reason her brother is dead, either. So Cali hates him, and he returns the favor. Thus, their prank-filled, insult-driven rivalry is born, and torturing Logan quickly becomes the highlight of her life. But when Cali’s parents set them up on a blind date, she begins to realize Logan might not be as boring as she always thought. He shares her love of poetry, takes a sadistic pleasure in making fun of crepes, and he makes her blush when he calls her smile pretty. And hey, maybe those long lashes of his aren’t that obnoxious after all… Two Roads is New Adult Romance about finding love, standing out, and learning to embrace who you are. It contains some language and mild sexual content.
My Review
I absolutely loved this story about Cali, a girl whose life is “empty, closed off and bleak,” even though outwardly she plays the part of the popular, carefree party girl. Cali devotes her time and energy to torturing Logan, planning one elaborate prank after another. Why does she hate Logan so much? The author keeps us guessing, only revealing that once upon a time, Logan was the best friend of Cali’s brother, Ben. The story kept me turning the pages to find out why Logan allowed Cali to hate him so much, and what actually happened to Ben:
“Our rivalry is beautiful, because it makes us both forget about everything else.”
It turns out that Cali and Logan actually have a lot more in common than Cali thought at first. They both love poetry, which plays a very important role in ‘Two Roads.’ As much as Cali’s hateful behavior frustrated me at times, I absolutely loved Logan! He is a gorgeous nerd, who allows Cali to vent her emotions and hatred towards him, and just does not back down.
Logan sees the “real” Cali underneath her hateful and mean treatment of him, and tries to help her let go of her anger, and tries to shows her that her life can have meaning. He is funny, sensitive and caring. Although he plays along with Cali’s constant pranks and her relentless hatred of him, he realizes what they have together. Will Cali ever recognize what is right in front of her? Will Logan let Cali push him away? ‘Two Roads’ answers all of these questions in a very emotionally satisfying conclusion. And trust me, Logan has now become of my favorite book boyfriends.
“Because you stole my heart, Cali,” he whispers, running his hand along my cheeks. “You stole my heart and now you won’t let me have yours.”
Two Roads is a wonderfully-written, emotion-filled story that shows that no matter how hard you search, sometimes love is right in front of you. Well done, L.M. Augustine! Looking forward to many more books from this very talented writer.
