ARC REVIEW: NOWHERE BUT HERE by RENEE CARLINO

Synopsis:

A jaded Chicago reporter in her twenties unexpectedly finds love in Napa Valley when she’s assigned to spend a week with a famously reclusive genius in this rich and deeply satisfying contemporary romance by the USA TODAY bestselling author of Sweet Thing.

Kate Corbin has lost her spark. A year ago, she had a handsome boyfriend and a budding career as a reporter at a popular Chicago newspaper. But after the woman who raised her passed away, leaving her lost and alone, she fell into a rut—and never got out. Now she’s stuck writing fluff pieces about lipstick and wine, and feeling trapped in a relationship that’s going nowhere.

Trusting that the hungry, ace reporter is buried somewhere deep inside, Kate’s boss and mentor gives her the opportunity to jump-start her career. The assignment: spend a week interviewing R. J. Lawson, a famously reclusive tech genius who disappeared years ago but recently reemerged as the owner of a well-respected Napa Valley winery.

Kate jumps at the chance, but the trip begins in disaster, both personally and professionally. After alienating R.J., her only saving grace is Jamie, a charming vineyard hand who shows her the beauty of wine country—and stirs her aching heart. It doesn’t take long for Kate and Jamie to fall hard, and for Kate to rethink her life in the city. But the week ends with a heartbreaking journey back to Chicago that sends Kate reeling, wondering what went wrong in those four perfect days.

My Review

I absolutely loved the sweet and sexy romance novel! The story of how Kate blossoms once she arrives in Napa Valley for her latest assignment had me hooked and I read this fabulous book almost in one sitting. The chemistry between Kate and Jamie was real and relatable to me and I fell in love with the California and Chicago settings of this story.

Kate is in a ho-hum relationship with a boyfriend who really doesn’t even pay that much attention to her. and decides to leap at the chance to interview a reclusive tech millionaire at his winery in Napa Valley. She has learned to rely on only herself, which is kind of poignant and sad.

“I’m all I’ve got.”

Jamie is one of the winery workers and let’s just say he brings Kate out of her shell.

“Food is like love,you know?”

“Yes,” I said breathlessly.

“We need it to stay alive.”

There is so much more to this story, and it is a richly written, lovely romance that left me wanting more! There are spoilers to this story, and no, I didn’t see them coming, unlike other readers. I absolutely loved the characters and the story took my breathe away. Nowhere but Here is a must-read for lovers of a solid story, contemporary romance and a swoony leading man!

Mud Vein Cover-4

Synopsis

When reclusive novelist Senna Richards wakes up on her thirty-third birthday, everything has changed. Caged behind an electrical fence, locked in a house in the middle of the snow, Senna is left to decode the clues to find out why she was taken. If she wants her freedom, she has to take a close look at her past. But, her past has a heartbeat…and her kidnapper is nowhere to be found. With her survival hanging by a thread, Senna soon realizes this is a game. A dangerous one. Only the truth can set her free.

Review:

What can I say about Tarryn Fisher other than she is one of my favorite writers? Her style is powerful, clean, bold and unapologetic. Mud Vein is no exception. Senna and Isaac’s story is not what you think, and not at all what you would you expect. This book totally took me off guard because I didn’t read any reviews with spoilers in them. Like her earlier books (The Love Me with Lies series), this story is brutally honest, and is not a hearts-and-flowers, sugary-sweet romance.

The plot is incredibly inventive and different, and stunning as well. I fell in love with Isaac and by the end of the book, also really cared about Senna even though as with other characters written by Ms. Fisher, she is a prickly sort. I did not see the ending of this book coming, and it is really best if you don’t know the ending as well. Mud Vein is another incredibly written book by Tarryn Fisher. She poured her heart and soul into this book and it really shows. I highly recommend Mud Vein. You won’t soon forget it.

Excerpt:

“Tell me something about your life with him,” Isaac urges.

I purse my lips. “Hmmm … so much fuckedupness. Where should I start?”

He blinks at me.

“A week before I graduated from high school he found a chip in one of our drinking glasses. He came storming into my room, demanding to know how it got there. When I couldn’t give him an answer he refused to talk to me. For three weeks. He didn’t even come to my graduation. My dad. He can make a drinking glass feel like a teen pregnancy.”

I hold out my mug and Isaac refills me.

“I hate whiskey,” I say.

“Me too as well.”

I cock my head.

“Hush,” he says. “You don’t get to judge my turn of phrase.”

I lay my arm across the table and rest my head on it.
He looks less and less like a doctor nowadays with his scruffy face and long hair. Come to think of it, he’s acting less like one too. Maybe this is rockstar Isaac. I don’t ever remember him drinking during the time we spent together. I lift my head and rest my chin on my arm.
I want to ask if he had a drinking problem back in the day—when he was actually living his tattoo. But it’s none of my business. We all medicate with something. He notices me looking at him funny. He’s on his fifth shot.

“Something you want to ask me?”

“How many more bottles of that stuff do we have?” I ask. The one he’s holding has a third left. I’m thinking we might have some darker days. We need to save the happy juice for sadder times.

He shrugs. “What does it matter?”

“Hey,” I say. “We are sharing family memories. Bonding. Don’t be depressing.”

He laughs, and sets the bottle on the counter. I wonder if he’d notice if I hid it. I watch him walk into the living room. I’m not sure if I should follow him or give him space. In the end, I go upstairs. It’s not my business what Isaac is struggling with. I barely know him. No, that’s not entirely true. I just don’t know this side of him.

I wrap myself in my comforter and try to sleep. The whiskey has made my head spin. I like it. I’m surprised I never got addicted to alcohol. It’s such a nice way to check out. Maybe I should find a new addiction. Maybe I should find Isaac.

Maybe…

BESIEGED (SHE WHO DARES #1) by L.P. LOVELL: REVIEW and GIVEAWAY

Title: Besieged
Author: L.P. Lovell
Genre: New Adult
Publication Date: February 14, 2014
Tour Host: Dreams Come True Promotions

What would you do if you were granted millions of pounds and a face that melts the underwear off of any woman? Meet Theodore Ellis, the business man who parties like a rock star, and has more women than he has room on his bed post to put the notches.

Meet Lilly Parker. With a difficult past; Lilly is cold, closed off and emotionally unavailable in every way. Don’t go thinking she’s the sweet and innocent victim though, she plays the game better than most men, and is the original use and abuse woman.
She’s built her walls ten feet high and topped with razor wire, but Theo is relentless in the face of a challenge and Lilly finds herself besieged by him. Can he get in her pants? Or will the unsuspecting man whore go a step further and finally tear down her walls? Unlikely.

This is no hearts and flowers love story, it is a battle of wills as a woman who trusts no-one denies a man who has never been denied.

Cue fireworks as female sass meets alpha male tenacity.

Besieged will make you laugh, fantasize and perhaps even shed a tear.

Add to GoodReads

I love picking up a book and being totally surprised and enthralled by a new author. I could not put down Besieged once I started. It is uber-sexy, scorchingly hot, but with a fantastic story that kept my attention until the last page and left me dying for more from this author! Warning: the build up to these two having sex is just as hot as when they actually get together and this book requires a cold shower or two! My favorite kind of book!

Theo is a wealthy London businessman and Lilly works for his solicitor (lawyer in the U.S.). She’s smart, sarcastic, funny and drop-dead sexy. Alhtough this might sound a tad familiar, the author really does a great job with Lilly and Theo’s story as well as with making the city of London a character in the book. I absolutely loved the club scenes as well as the well-written supporting cast of family and friends.

Lilly and Theo have some F***-HOT scenes and they literally cannot keep their hands off each other. Theo is a confirmed bachelor, he has never even wanted to spend any time at all with a woman, let alone commit to anyone. Lilly only uses guys for sex, so they enter into a no-strings-attached sexual relationship. But Lilly makes Theo fight for her at first, she’s stubborn, feisty and also very funny.
She’s no pushover and is painfully aware of his player status.

Theo can’t resist Lilly and what I loved about him is that he is totally honest with her. When he begins to develop real feelings for her, he puts himself on the line and does not play games.

Never have I gone to such lengths over a woman. I’m having to convince her that she wants me for god’s sake. I close my eyes and I can hear her moaning as I taste that sweet pussy of hers. Her cries as she trembles against my tongue. Oh god. My cock stiffens immediately at the memory.

I realise that now I know what it is to have her…I can’t go back. I will fight for her, no matter what.

All in all, I highly recommend this fantastic, sexy debut by L.P. Lovell. It’s modern, totally hot and has characters that I really care about and who I really bonded with. I am completely confident the next book in this series from Ms. Lovell will be a 5-star read for me after the author irons out a few minor editing kinks. I absolutely cannot wait for the next book! I need it now. Grab Besieged, let it take you on a sexy trip to London, and enjoy!

ARC Review: Forever Your Heart (Beside Your Heart #3) by Mary Whitney

Forever Your Heart

MW - Banner - Full

image

Synopsis:

I’m a journalist—Adam Kincaid, BBC reporter, to be exact, so I’m not going to bury the lead. I’m about to see the woman I never got over.

I know that because I’ve been back in America for years now, and I still don’t date American girls. My dad would say I’ve come to my senses, sticking to my own British patrician kind, but that’s crap. Mum, the psychologist, would more wisely say it’s my unresolved issues around Nicki. My teenage years are long behind me, yet my guilt over her remains. So I’ve avoided all things Nicki, though the irony is she’s the one avoiding me.

Maybe if we see each other, we can both move on. Could she ever forgive me? Can you forgive yourself when you hurt someone you love?

But please, don’t answer yet. I’ve jumped ahead of the story, and as a reporter, I should give you more background to get to the root of it all.

So let me tell you my story. Then you can be the judge.

NOTE: While this is the third in the series, it can be read as a standalone book.

Review

(Complimentary copy provided by the author in return for an honest review.)

Although this can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend that you read the first two books (BESIDE YOUR HEART and DISCLOSURE OF THE HEART) in the series before FOREVER YOUR HEART. It is not an absolute necessity but I fell in love with these characters in Book 1 and think that you will, too.

I love a male POV and FOREVER YOUR HEART captures Adam Kincaid’s voice perfectly. This is a fantastic second-chance love series about Adam and Nicki who met in high school in Texas under sad circumstances and meet up again years later at the White House, no less. Adam is a reporter for the BBC (he is British and was in Texas during high school for a brief time before returning to the UK) and Nicki is part of the White Press Office.

These books are intelligent looks into D.C. politics and are not your usual run-of-mill contemporary romance books. Mary Whitney writes with a confident voice and this third book is no exception. I loved getting into Adam’s head — what was he thinking when he left Nicki all those years before? — and seeing how he reacts to Nicki’s current fiancee and even his own romantic entanglements.

There is just the right amount of sexy time in this book, and we get a slow build-up to Nicki and Adam finally making their way back to one another. Adam is funny, warm but tough when he needs to be. I also loved meeting up again with the cast of supporting characters from this series, they make a great addition to Nicki and Adam and I would love to read more about them in the future! All in all, FOREVER YOUR HEART is a completely satisfying and wonderfully romantic installment in this intelligently written series by Mary Whitney.

– Ellen

Excerpt:

By the time we reached my room, though, the bed had become obsolete. We kissed along the way, and I couldn’t get our clothes off fast enough. When Nicki was naked, I had to listen to her usual nonsense about her body. Women will never learn that men are simply happy that they’re naked. After I told Nicki she wasn’t allowed to criticize a body I loved, she rewarded me with a forceful kiss. I grabbed her bum, and she kissed me again with a giggle before jumping up and wrapping her legs around me.

She was so close to me that it made the head of my dick feel like there was a homing device in it. The position must’ve unleashed something similar in her as well. She asked with a smile, “Shall we stand?”

Feeling her wetness against me, I practically hissed, “Why yes, thank you,” and my lips met hers for another kiss. As our tongues tangled, it struck me that I now had a far more verbal partner in Nicki than before. I wondered what I could say that would be…inspirational. Sadly, I knew my limitations. I wasn’t like my cad cousin. I was far too proper and reserved to talk dirty. So I decided to say exactly what I wanted. “Put me inside of you.”

The direct approach seemed to be just as good for her because she gasped, “God, yes.”

Author Bio:

Mary Whitney Author Pic

Mary Whitney blames Laura Ingalls Wilder and Margaret Mitchell for her obsession with romance novels. At an early age, Mary fell in love with the Little House series and its dreamy hero, Almanzo Wilder, who only wanted Laura to be Laura. Like many women, Mary later graduated to the ultimate, tall and dark bad boy, Rhett Butler, who loved Scarlett despite her flaws.

Mary has lived around the U.S., and after a first career in the non-profit world and politics, she’s settled in Northern California with her husband and daughters. She spends her days writing characters she hopes somehow capture the romance of Rhett and Scarlett and Almanzo and Laura. She’s a firm believer in what Rhett says to Scarlett: “You should be kissed, and often, and by someone who knows how.

Throttle Me by Chelle Bliss Blog Tour Stop

Men of Inked Series Book #1

SYNOPSIS:

Suzy’s a control freak and has her life mapped out – work hard, find a man with a stable job, and live happily ever after. She’s content with the status quo, but her plan comes to a screeching halt when he enters her life and turns it upside down.

City gave up on love when his heart was crushed in college, preferring to be the typical bachelor. He spends his nights hopping from one bed to another and his days working at his family tattoo shop, Inked. A chance encounter on a dark road makes him question what he had sworn off forever – a relationship.

A night of passion and lust causes them to question everything. Is City the knight in shining armor to the damsel in distress? Can their relationship survive when a fantasy falls apart and a secret comes out that changes everything?

REVIEW:

THROTTLE ME is another super-hot, sexy and delicious book from Chelle Bliss. Her books always have such a sense of heart and family infused into the smexy-ness of the story that they truly are a treat to read. I absolutely loved City – could he be ANY hotter?? – and the object of his lust, the very endearing schoolteacher, Suzy (or Suzette, City likes to use her real name and not her nickname). Often I read erotic romance that is rushed, empty, almost soulless, and Throttle Me is the compete opposite: a steamy, tattooed hot guy who has had his share of meaningless hook-ups but who has a real sense of romance, love and family.

Tattooed, motorcycle-riding Alpha bad boy? Check. Smart, hard-working, sweet woman who is just getting her first taste of really mind-blowing sex? Check. Well-written cast of supporting characters? Check! (Hello, Gallo brothers!) There are no billionaires here, no young, blushing virgin. What I have always loved about Chelle’s books are that the characters and everyday, working people, looking for love and having some super-hot sexy times along the way.

I loved Throttle Me and can’t wait for more books in this series!!

“Do you swear?” I asked as she set the glass back on the bar.
“What?” She gaped at me.
“Do you swear? Simple question. You’ve said ‘heck’ and ‘friggin’’ so far, but nothing dirty.”
“Oh, um, yeah, I swear.” Her cheeks turned pink and a small smile spread across her face. “I’m just used to watching my words with the kids around all day.”
“Prove it,” I said as I stared in her blue sapphire eyes.
“What? Why?”
“Cause I need to know if it’s in you. Are you all good girl or is there more under there dying to come out?” I hid the smile and laughter that was so close to breaking free from my lips. The pink of her cheeks spread across her face. I know I embarrassed her, but fuck, I needed to know if I stood a chance.
“Yes, I swear. What do you think I am? I’m not a child, City.” She glared at me as she raised the drink to her lips and wrapped them around the rim. Fuck I wanted those lips wrapped around my shaft, taking me deep and sucking me off.
“Never said you were, babe. Do you drink besides tonight?” I asked, now smiling because I knew she was upset. I liked the fire I saw in her eyes when I pointed out her good girl qualities – she obviously didn’t like being labeled.
“Sometimes. I’m just responsible. I don’t drink and drive. My dad used to be a cop and it was drilled into my head at an early age.” The words she spoke hit me like a ton of bricks. Drunk driving was the one thing in the world that caused my blood to boil.
Good girl teacher with a cop father? Just my luck. “Nothin’ wrong with that. Virgin daiquiris aren’t always your thing, then?”
“Why? Do I have to be a drinker? I mean does it make me less of an adult?”
“No, Suzy. Just trying to get a feel for who you are – what you are.”

Synopsis

Sometimes doing the wrong thing feels so right…

I’m a player. I’m an asshole. I’m someone you should stay away from.

I have demons.
I’ve made mistakes.
And the biggest can’t be taken back.

I’ve gone to hell and back in twenty-nine years and I’m only now coming to terms with moving forward, righting my wrongs, and making amends. Except not everyone deserves forgiveness. Sometimes the damage done is beyond repair.
Everyday is exactly the same. I focus on the pain, in the quest to feel and forget, but I remember everything. When I close my eyes the darkness encroaches and some days it feels like the things that kill me are the things that make me feel alive.

*Ridge, like Wild, is a standalone.
Reading Wild first will provide some back story, but is not required to read Ridge

Review:

Ridge was much more than I expected, and I really loved this book! We first met Ridge in Wild (Book #1) but this is a standalone book, and you do not need to read Wild first.

Ridge slept with his brother’s fiancée Mia, but they really never intended to hurt anyone. They really love each other but Ridge is consumed by guilt over his relationship with his brother, so he suddenly breaks up with Mia in an effort to repair his relationship with his brother. Ridge battled addictions most of his life, and breaking up with Mia sends him into a downward spiral. He had a very, very rough past, including drugs and spending time in juvenile detention, among other things.

Ridge has now become a successful restaurant owner but his pain over Mia pulls him into a very, very dark place. He tries to have other relationships but no one can compare to Mia. Even when he was a jerk to everyone, I loved him! He was never intentionally hurtful and really wanted to make things right.

Mia had every right not to care about Ridge, but even after he broke her heart, she really tries to do the right thing. I loved how she was a multi-dimensional character and seemed very “real” to me.

Oh, and the sex! It is HOT AS HELL . I mean, really dirty, scorching hot sex scenes. I applaud you Ms. Wild! I literally read this book in a few hours. It is the kind of book where you can’t tear your eyes away from what is happening in front of you. If you like a down-and-dirty story with flawed characters, you will love Ridge.

EXCERPT

“Come here.” I pulled her into my arms. She shook and trembled, without saying a word. I stroked her back, down her long hair and sucked in the heady scent of her damp skin clinging to me.
“I brought food. It’s going to be all right, My,” I murmured against her cheek before I glanced down to see a river of red streaking the tile grout.
Jesus Christ what was happening?
“Mia.” I swallowed and pulled at her hand, the one clenched in a tight fist. “Fuck Mia, give me your hand.” I pried her fingers open to find a razor blade cutting into her palm.
“I tried not to, I didn’t want to, but I’m losing it.” She sobbed and dropped the razor from her hand. It fell in her lap, bright red marring the fluffy white towel wrapped around her.
My hands shook as I looked around for something to wrap her hand in. I had to stop the bleeding. I didn’t know anything about this. Was it too deep? Did she need stitches? Fuck, maybe I should call an ambulance.
“Jesus, Mia, you should have called me.” I pulled my shirt over my head and wrapped it around her open palm, pressing to stop the bleeding.
“I was just holding the razor so tight, I didn’t even realize that it cut me.”
“I know, baby.” I rained kisses across her forehead.
A soft sob escaped her throat.
“If it happens again, call me. Talk to me. Take it out on me, baby. I’m here for you. I know this is so fucking hard but you’re not alone, I’m here, My.”
She licked her lips and her deep green eyes turned up to me. Silent tears fell as I held her cut hand in my own.
“Christ, come here.” I heaved her into my arms and carried her out the door and laid her on the bed.
“Listen to me. I’m taking you somewhere tomorrow. Therapy, whatever you need. Take the time off work, you went back too soon, I shouldn’t have left you alone, fuck.” I was rambling, but I was terrified. I’d never seen her like this. Despondent, empty, numb. Jesus Christ, my beautiful, fiery girl was numb.
“Losing her, it just brought me back. After Josh killed himself, they disappeared. They were there, but they weren’t.”
“I know, baby. I know.” I rocked her across my lap on the bed.
“Let me be strong for you. Let me take the pain away. Remember what we used to do, baby? The pain, the pleasure? I’ll be that for you, again. Take it out on me.”
Her eyes held mine, passion surged before she straddled my waist, wrapped her fingers in my hair and pressed her lips to me in a punishing kiss.

Review

I love a rockstar book and Tyler and Stella is no exception! Stella is trying to make her way in New York City as a music journalist and is far from the plastic-looking groupies that hang around bands. She’s an average girl who had very big dreams at one time in her life. After a rocky start with Tattoo Thief involving an article on her best friend Beryl and one of the band members, everything is forgiven and Stella and Tyler become drawn to each other.

Both are hiding very sad pasts, and very big secrets. They both have a hard time trusting each other and at times, almost break apart. Stella can’t believe that Tyler is actually a nice guy since she usually falls for the bad boys:

I always say, “A bad boy can’t break your heart,” because with them, you’ve got no expectations. You don’t expect roses. You don’t expect to be wooed or complimented or spooned. You don’t expect to be called the next day or taken home to mother.
And that’s what kills me about Tyler. I assumed he was a bad boy, with his tattoos and devil-may-care rocker attitude. But then, somewhere along the line, I started to think he was good.
And it bit me in the ass.

Tyler and Stella has a great story, and a wonderful cast of supporting characters. I loved the inside look into the non-glamourous side of the music business and music journalism. At times I became frustrated with Stella, and I did want Tyler to take things a little faster, but it all makes sense in the end. The sex scenes have just the right amount of steam and the author takes her time to build a relationship first between the characters, so that I felt a very strong emotional connection between them.

Tyler is a total sweetheart! I can’t wait to read the next story in the Tattoo Thief series!

Review

4 stars!!

I started reading this book without knowing very much at all about the series. The author immediately drew me in with Mia and Schooner’s story, and I stayed up most of the night reading Books 1 and 2! And I immediately downloaded Book 3 because I can’t wait to read their conclusion.

This is a beautifully written story of love lost, love found and second chances, helped along by the power of social media, which did not exist when our Mia and Schooner graduated from college. Schooner is the gorgeous, WASP-y star tennis player, who feels valued only because of his All American good looks. He has the perfect girlfriend, but he doesn’t really feel the connection with her that he feels for the fiery, opinionated Mia, who he feels really loves him for himself and not for his looks or wealth.

“Schooner kept everyone happy. Schooner Moore had no f’ing idea who he really was.”

They love each other but circumstances lead to them breaking up very painfully while in college. Fast forward years later, and Schooner has found her again, the girl he has not stopped thinking about for over 20 years. I don’t want to give a detailed plot description, because this book should be enjoyed without knowing what’s going to happen. I loved all of the characters in this book but be warned, you will need to second book handy to jump right in so you can continue Mia and Schooner’s story.

Julie Richman is a wonderfully talented writer and this book is a rich story filled with well-written characters, heartbreak, triumph and some really hot sex scenes.

Review

4 1/2 stars!!

I loved this book even more than the first because Julie Richman’s writing is even deeper and more detailed. Moore to Lose was totally unexpected and filled with characters that are essential to Mia’s growth as a person. It is not easy to tell a story in flashbacks, and with alternating POV’s, but the author did a great job.

Mia is somewhat of a lost soul and there are a few situations that are a little painful to read. Mia becomes reckless in her search for true love that will replace the emptiness she still feels after losing Schooner. But there are some beautiful scenes on Book Two and all intertwines with her reunion with Schooner, and her sometimes-difficult relationship with Schooner’s two children that he has from his marriage to CJ. There is lots of graphic sex in Moore to Lose (which I loved) and an ending that will leave to desperate for “more” (pun intended).

This was not really a story that was focused on Schooner and Mia but was more about Mia’s journey and relationships during their years apart. I thought this would be a story about the two as a couple but it was primarily Mia’s story during their two decades apart.

I admit I was incredibly frustrated with both Mia and Schooner at times during this book but I loved the fast-paced storyline and flawed characters that Mia meets during her time apart from Schooner. I love Julie Richman’s writing and I’ve already started Book 3!

About the Author

I must’ve been 5 or 6 when I started writing “stories”. I would write them and hide them. Not wanting anyone to see my “secret” thoughts. I needed to write -even back then. Now I’m just not hiding them anymore. Is that a sign of maturity? Nah ….
Writer, photographer, insatiable wanderluster, edge-player, foodie, music addict, pop culture fanatic, animal lover, warrior for the rights of people and planet, and avid cusser (am a Native New Yorker, so very little offends me … and if I am offended, it must be pretty freaking bad .. like bad grammar!).
I am big believer in signs and if we keep ourselves open, there are guideposts all along the way. Stay humble. Be true. Be you.
Life is not a dress rehearsal…
