About the Book:
France, 1714: in a moment of desperation, a young woman makes a Faustian bargain to live forever and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets.
Thus begins the extraordinary life of Addie LaRue, and a dazzling adventure that will play out across centuries and continents, across history and art, as a young woman learns how far she will go to leave her mark on the world.
But everything changes when, after nearly 300 years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore and he remembers her name.
My Review:
“If a person cannot leave a mark, do they exist?”
WHERE DO I BEGIN? For someone who doesn’t normally read fantasy, I fell in the love with this story from the very first word. The audiobook was an epic journey that I never wanted to end! V.E. Schwab is absolutely brilliant. Do not miss this stunning and wildly imaginative story!
Addie LaRue made a bargain with a dark god named Luc when she just a young girl living in rural France. She would have done anything to escape her life at that time but now is doomed to live forever with a catch: no one she meets will remember her name.
Spanning centuries, Addie’s story is both tragic and compelling. She learns to survive on her own, living day to day and sometimes minute to minute. In her darkest moments, she summons Luc, a handsome, green-eyed being who is intent on possessing her. He rescues her from some of the most dangerous situations and they battle it out across the ages. Does Luc love Addie or does he simply want to possess her? He cannot seem to resist her even though it can be decades in between his appearances.
Addie does in fact leave a mark on history even though no one can remember her. The author cleverly finds a way for Addie to make her mark, even if it is not in the traditional sense. I could not believe how I was hanging on every word of this book. The narration by Julia Whelan was like listening to a well-trained actor. Perfection!
How can Adeline ever survive when no one can remember her? She becomes desperately lonely as the centuries pass by, until one day in New York City she meets a handsome boy named Henry. He actually remembers her the next time they meet! Addie cannot believe it. She and Henry fall desperately in love.
“Three words, large enough to tip the world. I remember you.”
Henry has an incredibly intricate backstory. The way in which his fate unfolds was simply breathtaking. The book alternates between centuries and locations in a brilliant way. The author also writes wonderfully about family, relationships, time, and love. I could not get enough!
“Blink, and the years fall away like leaves.”
It is a measure of the author’s talent that I actually fell in love with the villain, Luc. I am so curious about his history and how he became part of the darkness. I also cannot recommend the audiobook highly enough. Julia Whelan brings Addie, Luc and Henry to life. ‘The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue’ is one of the best books of 2020. A must-read!
“. . . time always ends a second before you’re ready. That life is the minutes you want minus one.”
