About the Book:
Newlyweds Sam Statler and Annie Potter are head over heels, and excited to say good-bye to New York and start a life together in Sam’s sleepy hometown in upstate New York. Or, it turns out, a life where Annie spends most of her time alone while Sam, her therapist husband, works long hours in his downstairs office, tending to the egos of his (mostly female) clientele.
Little does Sam know that through a vent in his ceiling, every word of his sessions can be heard from the room upstairs. The pharmacist’s wife, contemplating a divorce. The well-known painter whose boyfriend doesn’t satisfy her in bed. Who could resist listening? Everything is fine until the French girl in the green mini Cooper shows up, and Sam decides to go to work and not come home, throwing a wrench into Sam and Annie’s happily ever after.

My Review:
This is the first book I have listened to by Aimee Molloy, and the first half of it was absolutely fabulous! The multiple narrators were outstanding – I am a huge fan of Marin Ireland – and there is big twist that might have had more impact if I had been reading as opposed to listening to an audiobook. If you have read the book, then you will know what I am talking about. I hesitate to give this one three stars because I really did enjoy it!
I LOVE psychological thrillers and this one was amazing in its build-up. I especially loved hearing from Sam’s point of view. I was on the edge of my seat while listening mostly because nothing is at it seems in this book. I thought I knew where this book was going but then it veered off in a completely different direction.
This audiobook was very addicting and the small-town setting was wonderful. The author made me care about all of the characters (except for the local police chief – he was a definite no!) This book would have been a 5-star read for me except for the rushed and somewhat convoluted conclusion, as well as the blatant copying of a famous book and movie. However, I am still recommending this wild ride of a book for any thriller lover.
This is undoubtedly an imaginative and fast-paced book and I am still thinking about it days after finishing. I did love the excellent writing and tension, it was just the ending that fell a little flat for me.
I have heard amazing things about Aimee Molloy and I am excited to read ‘The Perfect Mother.’ I listened to this book almost in one sitting and recommend not reading any spoiler reviews. Definitely give this one a try if you want an edge-of-your seat psychological thriller that is sure to surprise. The narrators are fantastic!
Thank you to Libro.fm and the publisher for providing me with an audiobook listening copy in exchange for an honest review.
