Than a dangerous and troublesome past.
THE MISTER, the highly anticipated new love story from #1 New York Times bestseller E L James is available now!
London, 2019. Life has been easy for Maxim Trevelyan. With his good looks, aristocratic connections, and money, he’s never had to work and he’s rarely slept alone. It’s a role he’s not prepared for and one that he struggles to face.
But his biggest challenge is fighting his desire for an unexpected, enigmatic young woman who’s recently arrived in England, possessing little more than a dangerous and troublesome past. Reticent, beautiful, and musically gifted, she’s an alluring mystery, and Maxim’s longing for her deepens into a passion that he’s never experienced and dares not name. Just who is Alessia Demachi? And can Maxim protect her from the malevolence that threatens her? And what will she do when she learns that he’s been hiding secrets of his own?
From the heart of London through wild, rural Cornwall to the bleak, forbidding beauty of the Balkans, The Mister is a roller-coaster ride of danger and desire that leaves the reader breathless to the very last page.

MY REVIEW:
I enjoyed this passionate erotic romance! Set aside any preconceived notions you might have about this book, because it is a complete standalone story and absolutely nothing like the ‘Fifty Shades’ series. Although I did wonder about the hero Maxim Trevelyan’s name (hello, Grace Travelyan Grey!) But perhaps the author will address that in a later book.
Maxim finds himself reeling after the sudden, tragic death of his brother, Kit. Maxim was always the irresponsible, hard-partying brother but he is now a member of the British Peerage, as the Earl of Trevethick. There are farms and lands and actual businesses to run.
“I can’t pinpoint the moment I made peace with Kit’s inheritance and with Kit himself, but it happened sometime in my late teens. He had the title, he’d won the girl, and I had to accept that. But now everything is mine. Everything.”
Always the womanizer, Maxim becomes completely captivated by his shy new cleaning lady Alessia. Although Maxim’s POV is told in the first person, Alessia’s POV is told in the third person, an interesting device which worked fine for me. E.L. James is wonderful at writing a sexy Alpa male POV so I enjoyed Maxim’s chapters the best.
Alessia has been brought to England against her will and soon she and Maxim are embroiled with very dangerous men. Alessia is from Albania and is not used to very many modern conveniences but is an brilliant pianist and becomes lost in her music when given the chance to play piano.
“Would this ever get old? Listening to her? I open my eyes. Watching her. Her beauty. Her talent. Playing such a complex piece from memory. The girl is a genius. While I was away, I’d thought that I’d embellished her performance in my imagination. But no. Her technique is flawless. She’s flawless. In every way.”
I have read some of the reviews for this book, and while I believe that reading is subjective, I think that many of these reviews are unnecessarily harsh. (You want to read a 1-star book? I can show you plenty!) Overall I loved the lush settings and the exciting elements of suspense in this story. ‘The Mister’ was not what I expected at all and I could not wait to see what was going to happen next. While perhaps not a groundbreaking erotic romance, this story was steamy and sometimes funny and very unpredictable. I applaud Ms. James and can’t wait to see what she comes up with next!
