Creating Chemistry Guest Post
By A.L. Zaun
This is a tough one. It would almost mean that I had control over them, and in many ways, my characters did call a lot of their shots. When I translate the scene that’s happening in my head, I try to focus on minute details, a touch, a glance, and a gesture just to name a few. I like to see their banter and personalities come to life, but I also like to have characters be multi-faceted. There are shades of grey in all of us. No one is 100% good or bad, and I like to show that in the way they think and interact with one another.
I spent a great deal of time in the character’s heads. Well, that’s not true. They spent a great deal of time telling me what to do. I wanted to make this story as real as possible. I didn’t want some far-fetched story, but something that women could relate to—a broken heart, finding comfort in reading, dealing with well-meaning friends, learning to open up, regret, remorse, mistakes, poor judgement—and to embrace that in the midst of all of that there is hope, and redemption. That also worked to create chemistry between the characters as they worked to live out their story.
